Bright Spark
Hi all,

A complete noob here who promised his son Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 once he's sat his 11+ exam only to realise he also needs to buy a new PC!!

I've put together the following build, would be grateful for your input.

PC will mainly be used to play above game on a 27" 1080 monitor (not purchased yet) but will probably get upgraded in the future (no 4K or VR gaming planned).

I'm already over budget (was hoping to be around £1,500) and with 32GB RAM so any input from you fine folk would be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you in advance.

If you can forego the platinum warranty I would switch it up a little to include the 3060Ti (more gaming focused).

You won't need 32GB of RAM for under 4k usage (16GB is typically fine even for 4k). I would opt for the 670 M2 drive as a secondary as well, there isn't an awful lot of difference in the money but it's a good bit faster and has excellent endurance.

I've selected a better rounded case, the 220 is fine though, if it's the look/size that you are after. The TD500 is just a bit better value for money.

Couple quick notes mate

The 4000D is a great choice it's a fantastic case

The 3060Ti is a 1440p based GPU, ideally you want a 27" monitor like the G5 to get the best usage out of it. I have a 3060Ti paired with a G5 and really like the set up. These monitors generally go for around £260-£300

CPU cooler is "fine". If the Coolermaster Liquid Lite 240 was in stock we generally recommend that for the 5600x but it's currently out of stock unfortunately. It's just in a great spot for price and performance with no real options around that same price point

FYI.... that rule kinda goes out the window with FS2020 unfortunately. Even for 1080p I think most would want at the very least a 2060 at 1080p. The 3060Ti will offer more bells and whistles and yet still struggle to get more than 40fps :D

Ughh....my brain is hurting! LOL!

QQ: what about the Radeon RX6600 XT vs what I've selected (RTX 3060 TI)? The Radeon is cheaper by quite a bit?
QQ2: is there a way to expedite the build process?

The 6600 XT is a great card but unfortunately it won't be any good with RayTracing (DX12). This is something that's coming to FS2020 and will make a huge visual impact. I personally wouldn't be without an Nvidia card for the coming years purely due to Raytracing ability.

If Raytracing isn't something you are particularly fussed with then the 6600XT will fair reasonably well. The 3060Ti is around 20% more powerful when RT is turned off but it's around 50% more powerful with it turned on. It just depends how much you are willing to compromise (50fps with the 6600XT vs 60FPS with the 3060Ti). The 6700XT would be more equivalent to the 3060Ti IMO, it at least trades blows.

Just a note on the cooler. The ideal Cooler Master 240mm AIO is currently out of stock but the Cooler Master 212 Black Edition would do a good job at taking the edge off of the temps over the stock cooler. It’s about £30 and worth considering if you’re wanting to make sure the CPU is comfortable. I had one one for a while and did the job for me!

Thanks everyone for your input so far (keep it coming!).

So I think this will be the spec.....added an additional HDD. Also added cooling as recommended by @JUNI0R

Hi all,

Thank you for all your help so far....I'm pretty much there but I do have one last question around the Motherboard (as have upped the RAM to 32GB now).

Is the ASUS® TUF X570-PLUS GAMING WIFI (USB 3.2 Gen 2, PCIe 4.0, CrossFireX) - RGB Ready! okay for this build?

On a separate note, so much for keeping it under £1,500! My 11yr old better game the cr@p out of it! LOL

Thanks @Scott. Would you recommend going down to the B550? Saves me £45. I upped the RAM to 32GB as the primary usage will be Microsoft Flight Sim which I believe does benefit with the additional RAM.

Definitely, for gaming the X570 offers you nil. As stated above, at 1080p the game isn't going to need anywhere near 32GB. It won't need any more than 16GB and run just fine.

With the recommended specs etc, it has to consider 4k usage as well as 1080p. I am a huge fan of FS2020 and I've not had more than 16GB in my rig. I game at just less than 4k on my VR headset and 1080p on my TV. No issues at all.

32GB won't do any harm of course, it's just a waste of money for this use case IMO.
