PC don't detect SSD only after restart

Hi guys,

I'm struggling finding a solution and need some help there.

The laptop start perfectly but as soon as I restart after a driver installation for exemple, the laptop don't boot anymore and don't even detect the SSD.
But, if i turn it off completely and start again, it does boot.

The BIOS is updated and every drivers for the components are updated.

I tried to verify the SSD connection but everything was fine.

I don't have the possibility to try to set the legacy mode as the BIOS is very restrictive on the CLEVO PB50RD.

Here is the specs

You're saying the laptop boot ok from a cold start (from a power off) but doesn't boot when you use the Windows restart option?

The first thing I'd suggest would be to turn Fast Sartup off. It's in the Power Options (enter the powercfg.cpl command in the Run box), click the 'Choose what the power buttons do' and in there uncheck the 'Fast Startup' box. Alternatively disable hibernation completely via the powercfg -h off command.

Leave the BIOS alone for now. Setting legacy mode won't help, if the drives are GPT formatted (which they almost certainly are) it will only boot in UEFI mode in any case.

Last week, i got in touch with the tech support and been said that the SSD is apparently defective.

I have been asked to send it back and they will provide a new one.

So it looks like it's solved.

Well.... I'm back.

I just unplugged the SSD to plug it on my tower to test it and guess what? No issue, i can start and restart on my gigabyte motherboard.

So I plugged it back there, remove the motherboard battery just in case it could do any miracle but the problem didn't disappear so it looks like the SSD is not faulty but more like the motherboard or the cheap Clevo BIOS.

Any ideas that could prevent me to loose 2-3 weeks to send the computer back to tech support (work need) would be more than welcome and more than appreciated.

When you say it doesn’t detect the drive, what are the symptoms, does it fail a PXE boot, or give an error?

Hi,

Sorry i was sure i posted it already. Here is the message i receive right after the laptop is turned on :

"No any Boot Option.
Insert Recovery Media and Hit any Key.
Then Select "Boot Manager" to choose a new Boot Device or to Boot Recovery Media."

After i click ok, this automatically send me to bios. When i check for the dd, it's not there, not even mentionned.

Right after that, if i turn the pc power of and push the on button, then the dd is automatically back.

But of i try to restart, then it's gone again.

Didn't try an IPv boot as i don't have it.

Very odd. I guess it could be a BIOS incompatibility, but you'd need to work through that with PCS.

Indeed this is weird.

Pretty sure it's linked to incompatibility or bios issue related too but as it is my first clevo and the cheap short version of the bios is a bit messy, i was thinking that i might have missed a detail.

Thanks for the help, i'm thinking that i'm less cray now haha.

I'm already in touch with the tech support but i hoped that i could avoid to send it back to england from France plus the waiting time to sort it out and send it back to me.

If when you next speak to them, mention the fact that the drive works perfectly in your tower as that's pretty important troubleshooting and may lead them in a different direction.

Yeah, i already sent them all the details and the steps i did.

I've been asked to send the dd back (they thought that it was faulty) but i verified before doing something pointless and i'm glad i did, otherwise i would have lost 2 weeks for nothing.

It does suggest either something with the motherboard itself or simply the BIOS. I'm sure they'll get to the bottom of it, with any luck they can sort it remotely.

I come back because the cause was all because of a faulty driver given by pcspecialist.

I had to find the issue by myself, the rma didn't solve anything. It came back after driver update. I had to force a bêta driver to go through.

Today because of a Windows update, it came back, yeepy !

Well in the end, i don't really recommend those laptop. I mean it's not that bad but their bios/motherboard are trash.

Which driver?

We generally never recommend using the PCS supplied drivers (from your account on the main site) because they're not updated and quickly go out of date.

And if the issue was fixed by a driver update then how does that make the BIOS and motherboard trash?

I have a Clevo laptop and don't think the BIOS is trash. It's simply locked down and doesn't give you too many options. While this might sound bad, it actually has a reason: To prevent people from messing with the wrong parameters and making the numbers of RMA go up by quite a lot.

And I also don't know how an unlocked BIOS would help you to solve your issue, since it's driver and software related. If you're saying that a windows update brought your faulty driver back, then Windows is to blame here, by pushing you a driver that doesn't work with your hardware.
