Hi Martin, thanks for your reply. Out of interest why the Ryzen 7 over the 9? Just a cost saving? Does the case you've gone for offer any advantages other than it's aesthetic? Lastly is the intel storage just slightly cheaper as it is running a tad slower than the seagate? And yeah, a quiet power unit is definitely a want for me, thanks for that!

The 3900 is the last generation and surpassed by the 5800x, the case i picked is better cooling than the one you chose and with the 5800x being the hottest running of the 5000 series cooling is everything, I upped to that PSU not just for quietness but also to give you overhead for upgrades in the future.

those intel 670p are great little drives I've got one in the Berserker in my signature

Thanks Martin, I had a play around again. Upped the 3900 to 5800 12 core. I dropped the water cooling. The case you chose didn't have compatibility with the motherboard for USB c, the only one I could find that had USB c support was over budget and I didn't think it essential to have it on the case there. I did take the PSU back to 650 for now as well just to drop the budget a tad. Also dropped the data drive as I'll use an existing one. Anyway, I'd be interested in your take on this setup.

It will cook and be under powered with no room for future upgrades and you're only about £30 cheaper than the spec i did, personally I can't see why folk are so infatuated with USB C, I've one usb c port on my mobo and a long lead plugged into it which hardly gets used

Thanks again Martin, I just wasnt sure if I wanted to bother with a case that has usb c that doesn't work. That's all, I hardly use it myself although it seems to be the way things are going with EU regs coming in. With regard to the cooling aspects are you saying the case you've chosen has more room for future upgrades and will generally allow for more airflow? Yep, exactly that, the case is one of the most important parts of a build, if you don't have good cooling, then things will start to thermal throttle.

For future upgrades you'll need the higher powered psu that i put in my spec

The STRIX B550 is a really solid board, yes it's not ideal but it's knocking on the door of a lot of the X570 boards, I'd be happy to suggest that with the 5900X. The other option is the Crosshair which goes the other way but that's a 5950X tier motherboard really

The Crosshair is the "I want the best motherboard" option. The Strix B550 is the "I want a great motherboard at a reasonable price" option.

X570 and B550 are a bit weird. Because X570 came out earlier, lots of the boards are actually not that far ahead of the equivalent tier B550 board and sometimes behind them in some features. Unless you are running a major overclock or are making heavy use of the PCIe lanes, a top-end B550 board is almost all you need in most circumstances.
