HI,
I am a complete noob and am treating myself for getting another step towards 40!!

I'm trying to keep it under £2000 and i would love your feedback on spec. it will be an occasional gamer, hd transcoding, high downloading, full time 1080p home theatre, ( "eventually 3d" )and and surround sound decoder. I just want to hook it to tv and speakers and away it goes!! lol

p.s. Any obvious errors/ compatibility problems or needs to be future proofed??

At a glance, change the HDD to the Wd10EAR 64mb cache, maybe even the sata 6gb/s 1tb? If you intend on adding a second card, consider Psu upgrade. Gfx card is ok all be a little low end compared to the cpu etc :) DVD rw not required as bluray drive does dvd, and dual layer dvd burning. Unless you want to copy from one disk to another or something.

I like it. Possibly move to an Nvidia gpu such as the 460 to get some CUDA goodness if your into the old transcoding.

As sleinous says, you can ditch the DVD Writer as the Blu-ray drive also reads DVD's and CD's.

Other than that, consider ordering the i7-930 instead of the i7-960 as it will save you quite a bit and we may just have a special offer on next week. I can't say anymore though ;)

Bugger lol, my comp has already lost £200 in value lmao, I guess this 'offer' will further depreciate it's value lol. God I hate the fastness of IT depreciation -.-

DId you consider the 2GB GTX 460, for £16 more? :p More future proofing :D It's also slightly overclocked compared to the 1GB GTX 460

Regarding the up coming reduction that you can't talk about, will it be on the site from this Monday 30th as my projected spend looks to be aroung 3,500k and as they say every little helps.
