I have a Proteus VIII no problems with the machine at all.

but each time I press either Capslock or num lock a little grey box appears on the screen with a padlock closed or open.

I really need to be able to turn this off.

how can this be done

And if that doesn't fix it, take a look through the ease of access features in Settings...

It also may be a setting in the management driver which I think is Control Center on the proteus?
