So after my well publicised departure from PCS at the start of the year, I have discovered the sun does not always shine brighter with the large laptop manufacturers, and they themselves do have problems. (Bear with me I will get round to explaining my story).
I went from PCS to a different manufacturer who charged me about £2.5k for a 15 inch i7-10875h RTX 2070 Super Max-Q. Silly money.
However that silly money did buy me an absolutely phenomenal machine (if not over priced).
7 months down the line the company released their new generation of the same laptop with a Ryzen 9 5900HX and an RTX 3080. This was even sillier money and me being me, thought it would be a good idea to sell the previous laptop and upgrade.
Big mistake... The new laptop on paper should be an absolute monster. Unfortunately it is not. The laptop suffers from severe stuttering issues on every single game I own. It does not matter if the games settings are reduced to the absolute minimum the stutter remains.
The only thing that seems to improve the stuttering is locking the framerate to 60Fps. This clearly is not a solution considering the specs of the machine and the fact it has a 300Hz panel.
After many many hours of testing I have come to the conclusion that the problem lies with the fact that the company for some bizarre reason decided to remove the MUX from the new generation of laptops and implementing Optimus. The reason I think locking the FPS helps is because it reduces the frames the dGPU is sending to the APU. I think the Ryzen 9 is struggling to keep up with the number of frames it is receiving from the RTX and is just dumping some which is causing the stutter.
So why am I posting this on a PCS forum? The laptop has been RMA'd and is going back to the manufacturer. I am confident they are going to tell me the laptop is performing as intended. At this point I will be getting my money back and looking elsewhere, against my better judgement I may as well come back to PCS as the big companies have just as many problems as the ones I experienced in the years I was a customer.
So here it is, I want an RTX 3080 laptop preferably with an Ryzen 9 5900HX (I appreciate this comes with logistical problems).
I have two big questions at this point:
1. Has PCS got a grip on the COVID situation and are their laptop build times better than they were a year ago?
2. It would appear my two options of laptop will be either a Recoil or the Ionico. Was the TongFang chassis the Ionico used the ticking time bomb we all feared after the Vyper debacle?
As always any advice comments and suggestions are much appreciated.
I want the laptop for gaming and want to playing everything with the shiniest settings possible at the highest frames possible.
