Price Increases (Brexit, I assume?)

Hi,

I had a saved configuration which was around the £2350 mark, and I now see it's nearly £2600.

I assume prices have been pushed upwards by the weak pound, is there any confirmation of this or have I just hit upon an odd specification that's gone up in price.

Not ideal when you really expect more for your money as time progresses, not less.

Guess my order can stay in the configurator for a while longer :-(

Prices change all the time based on the cost of the various parts. Brexit might have had an impact but prices were chaning long before the June vote.

If you want a confirmation from PCS you will have to phone or email them as they don't often get a chance to check the forums.
But I would highly suspect it is because of the weak pound - many things are unfortunately rising in price (remember the recent news headline about Tesco refusing to stock Unilever products because the price was going up).

Pretty sure PCS have said on these forums that the situation of the £ has been a significant factor in prices, though I can't find the link atm.

I too have been playing with the configurator recently for a personal rig and the price bumped significantly a few days ago. I assume it is the weak pound as pretty much everything has had been affected, if it were normal price movement then only certain items would have been affected.

Its like guessing when to buy foreign currency at the moment, things can change rapidly. Any positive news on the UK's position with the EU will likely reverse some of the falls making things slightly cheaper but it could equally go the other way.

I'm afraid this trend is here to stay. Weak pound due to Brexit mess is causing prices to go up! Since most of tech hardware is imported to UK, weak pound = higher prices. It's absolutely normal and to be expected now.
HP and Dell already increased prices by 10%, Microsoft recently announced that Azure and enterprise software go up by 13%. Lot's of other tech companies doing exactly the same. For good or bad reason, if they can increases prices they will happily do it... and now they have a perfect excuse: "Brexit and weak pound".

I know I could get Samsung 850 SSD 6 months ago for less than £65 (some retailers selling at £60) now... it's £85 !!! Well that's price hike of £20 in 6 months. It's a mess that is unlikely to change in any short time. PC Specialist are no different they don't manufacture PC components they source them from channel distributors so it's more expensive for them too.

Big issue is that if tomorrow value of pound go back to it's original, prices will stay exactly as they are.. maybe over time they drop but it will be a long time indeed. You can look no further than petrol prices example. Price of oil barrel halved over several months yet prices at the pumps only dropped by a tiny fraction.

I've been keeping an eye on an Ultranote III config for the last month or so and have so far held off buying because Kaby Lake is within touching distance but the price is creeping up. I think I'm going to order today but I'll kick myself if the 7th gen CPUs become available soon after. Dilemma.

I know we can't discuss politics on here but I'm wondering whether the election of Donald Trump next week might do for the dollar exchange rate what the Brexit vote did for the pound? US made hardware might possibly be a bit cheaper for a while?

If he wins which is not certain. When it was announced he was ahead on the polls it did push the dollar down. I think that may be the case just before the official figures are released and confirmed. In terms of delaying a purchase of a pc or pic hardware, I doubt the sudden increase in the strength of the pound against the dollar will affect prices for UK households at least until not immediately or the next few months.

Any strengthening of the £ probably wouldn't kick in until the new year at the very earliest. In terms of 7th gen chips they will probably be early next year according to what I looked at ;last month.

Weak pound and lower inflation in the UK are two key factors in a steady increase in prices. Natural disasters, political uprising and other issues can affect prices for the short term.

Always seems like when it means putting up the prices due to currency fluctuations businesses act instantly, it takes months or years for the other way. The worst example is fuel. It can shoot up 10p the same day as barrel prices go up, but took months when price per barrel dropped drastically earlier this year.

I think they call that Rip-off Britain. I wish we could all live in the mountains at high altitude. That's where I see myself in five years.

I think we're teetering on the edge of discussing politics now which is not permitted. It might be wise to let this thread rest for now? :)

Should we hold a referendum to decide that?

P.S. And did nobody spot the movie quote in my earlier post?

Bing! Straight off the bat. You are in fire today.
No, I googled it, I really haven't seen Groundhog Day. Wouldn't even have suspected it was from a movie if you hadn't mentioned it.

Though that's not to imply that's the kind of thing I'd expect you to say.. err.. obviously :sweatdrop:
