Problems with BCD when reinstalling windows

If anyone knows how to solve this I’ll be very grateful since I’ve been trying to fix this for about 1 month with no success.

Shortly after I installed pcspecialist drivers for my device it caused a blue screen. This has happened twice before and had been fixed quite simply previously by reinstalling windows from USB. For some reason this time is different. The windows installation software reaches 100% then returns to a different blue screen (bcdboot error).
I’ve tried to solve this using online tutorials since other people seemed to experience the same problem, however they never seem to work. I’ve followed online instructions and used the boot USB to use command prompt to rebuild the BCD. This says it is successful but then the same error code appears. Has anyone found the solution to this problem?

First error code: 0xc000000f
Second error code: 0xc0000098

Couple of questions:

Where are you sourcing your drivers? You should allow windows update to find all drivers apart from Clevo Control Center and nVidia graphics.

Where are you sourcing the windows installation image?

Just to confirm, what version of windows are you installing?

I originally sourced the Clevo Control driver from the link that came with my purchase through pcspecialist. Whilst there I assumed it would be beneficial to download all the other drivers as well since they were specific to my system.
The windows installation image came from the windows website. I downloaded the latest version (maybe 1803) to a 32gb drive from another pc and booted my pc from that using F7/F8 whilst powering up.
I also downloaded a 1703 version since some people suggested it was a bug with the latest version but that didn’t seem to work either.

Sorry, I'm not really following? When you say you're downloading 1803 to a 32Gb drive, do you mean you're creating a bootable USB to install from? The latest windows version is 1909, so if you are installing 1803, you're very out of date and I wonder where you're getting the installation media.

I'm also unsure how you're installing it, not clear on your installation process.

As said, you'd let windows update install all drivers apart from the 2 I mentioned, all the others will be well out of date and will cause system instability.

So let's start from scratch. Get an 8Gb or over USB key and use the following tool to create a bootable media:

Then you need to set the bios to boot from the USB key so plug it in, go into the BIOS and change the boot order to the USB as the first device

That will start windows installation. The first part of which you will be faced with which partition to install windows to. You need to delete all partitions from the OS drive that currently exist, then create a new partition using all the space and select that to install to.

That will install windows. Once installed first thing to do is run windows updates, that will install all updates and drivers except for nvidia and clevo control center, those you need to install from www.nvidia.com and wherever you've been given the latest clevo control center, usually www.clevo.com.tw

Then BEFORE installing anything else, install HWMonitor from here https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html and check idle temperatures are ok, post the results.

If you're experiencing BSODS at this point, then there's something wrong with your hardware.

Just to be clear I can’t access my desktop to update windows. Every time I turn on my computer I get a blue screen with error code 1 as described above.
I’ve attempted several times from different computers to reinstall windows from a USB drive. I’ve just tried again to make sure I was attempting to install 1909 and this had the same problem. I reach the install windows page, choose custom installation, delete all partitions and select a single partition of unallocated space. The computer seems to be installing windows and restarts to complete the update, at which point it returns to the blue screen with error code 1.
I believe this is due to a corrupted bcdboot.exe but I’m not sure how to fix this

Have you changed anything in the BIOS, like disabling UEFI Secure boot?

Also, just to be clear, what's the size of the drive you're trying to install to?

Can you list your full specs?

My computer is a Clevo N871EP. I tried to retrieve full specs from command prompt but the command ‘systeminfo’ wasn’t a recognised command.
The drive is split into 2 disks.
Disk 0: 223GB
Disk 1: 29GB

Disk 0 is split into 4 partitions

Part 1: 529MB Recovery
Part 2: 100MB System
Part 3: 16MB Reserved
Part 4: 222GB Primary

Disk 1 has 1 partition

Part 1: 29GB Primary

When installing windows it shows all the partitions of disk 0. I delete them all so that there is a single partition of unallocated space. I choose this to install windows on. When this doesn’t work and the computer restarts all the partitions reappear.

So once you've deleted all partitions, you're then creating a new partition using all the space? Sorry, by what you said it sounds like you're trying to install to unallocated space which obviously won't work.

No that’s what I was trying to do. When this happened last year I got instructions from someone at PCSpecialist on how to reinstall and he said to delete all partitions and select unallocated space to install windows on and it worked twice. When I get the choice of selecting partition it shows all 4 partitions. This time, I deleted them all then selected create new. It created the same 4 partitions. I selected system (partition 4) and the same error code showed after installation was complete.

Yes, it will create multiple partitions automatically. That will be the issue then, you're trying to install to the System Partition which if you look is very small indeed. You need to install to the largest partition, usually labelled Partition 1.

First, make sure you've reenabled secure boot in the BIOS.

I’ve done this and it hasn’t worked again. Partition 4 is my biggest partition.
Could this be a problem with bcdboot?
Can you go through deleting partitions and creating a new one, then take a photo of the partition system before installing and upload it?

Actually it does work, and it avoids selecting the wrong partition for the Windows install.

Here's what you need to do......

1. Download the Windows Media Creation Tool and run it to create installation media on a brand new USB stick (it's entirely possible the one you're using is faulty - I've seen that before).
2. Boot that installation media (you may need to use a Fn key to select the boot device or modify the boot order in the BIOS).
3. Select a 'custom install'.
4. Delete ALL partitions on the system drive (your drive 0) so that the whole drive shows as 'unallocated space'.
5. Select (highlight) that unallocated space and click the Next button. The installer will create the correct partition structure (for Windows) and install Windows into the correct partition.

If, as you seem to be saying, you get an error before Windows has installed (or even after Windows has installed) then you have a hardware issue. Probably that drive 0 - is that an SSD? In that case phone PCS and book it in for an RMA explaining what you've done and how it failed.

Ok I’ll try that later but I think it’s just got worse. The computer now won’t boot from USB and instead says “The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors
File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD
Error Code: 0xc000000f

I suspect that message refers to the device you're trying to boot, it's telling you the installation files have not been properly written to the USB stick.

It's important that you buy a NEW USB stick to be sure there are no issues with it - I think the one you're using is a dud. Then use the Media Creation Tool to write the installation files to that NEW USB stick (8GB minimum size). Then boot that NEW USB stick.
