Hi,
Am getting a real headache trying to upgrade my 2 x 4GB RAM modules to 2 x 8 GB in my 4 year old laptop and hoping someone can help please.
The laptop is a Cosmos Series: 15.6" current RAM is 2 x 4 GB , DDR4 2133 MHz - Corsair VALUESELECT - CM4X4GF2133C15S2.
Have purched and tried 2 x 8 GB , DDR4 2666 MHz modules - laptop wont boot after installing.
Also purhed and tried 2 x 8 GB , DDR4 2133 MHz modules and same thing, laptop wont boot after installing.
Original spec of laptop when purhed says supports DDR4 2400MHz, 2 x 1GB/2GB/4GB/8GB/16GB Modules.
Can anyone help / advise please?
Kind Regards
Pete

I can't find details of the current RAM you're using as it's an OEM part number.

Can you install CPU-z and verify the voltage of your current RAM and reference that against the replacement RAM?

Normally failure to boot would be voltage related.

Hi SpyderTracks,
My laptop is currently with my grandson on a Fortnite binge night with his school buddies. I have CPU-Z already loaded trying to help sort my issue. Will it be OK if I get back to you on voltages tomorrow please ?

Of course, whenever you can.

As Spyder already said a voltage issue would be my guess , The only other thing I can think of and it would be rare is that ram has JEDEC profiles and it might be that the ram you purchased can't actually run at 2400mhz or below , That's a stab in the dark but much more likely what Spyder suggested.

Hi SpyderTracks / Jasontvnd,
Thank you both for helping with my issue so much appreciated.
After running the CPU-Z prog can see that the current original RAM in the laptop CM4X4GF2133C15S2 is showing at 1.20 V on th SPD tab page in timing tables. If it would be of use here are som more details off the page:-

Slot # 1 :DDR4
Max Bandwidth : DDR4-2133 (1066 MHz )
Module Manufctr : Corsair
DRAM Manf: Micron Technology
Part No. : CM4X4GF2133C15S2

That ram should definitely work in your motherboard.

Is the system power cycling by any chance?

Sometimes ram training can take a little bit.

Hi, thanks for the prompt response. The system will not boot at all. The power on off button top centre of keyboard lights up for a short period about ever 3 secs and thhats all that happens. I have let it do that for about a minute tops on the several attempts of RAM changes but it does not boot.

but it boots fine with the old ram, sounds like some bad ram, where did you get it

Have purched and tried 2 x 8 GB , DDR4 2666 MHz modules - laptop wont boot after installing.
Also purhed and tried 2 x 8 GB , DDR4 2133 MHz modules and same thing, laptop wont boot after installing.
Tried 2 different sets though, I'd be suprised if they're both dud sets.

They're definitely installed fully pressed down until the silver catches latch on? Sorry to ask, I'm sure you know what you're doing, it's just really odd.

I can potentially understand why the 2666MHz wouldn't work, as @Jasontvnd says, some modern sticks actually have inbuilt JEDEC chips and as such can auto overclock to their rated speeds (so long as the motherboard supports it). I don't know how that would fair if the board maxxed out at 2400MHz, it could potential cause a no boot scenario. But equally, I would have also assumed that the board would override the RAM modules and just run it at a max of 2400MHz.

For an example, the Corsair Vengeance SODIMMS have on board JEDEC chips but I'd be surprised if value RAM did but maybe these days it's more standardised.

But I can't see any reason why the 2133MHz wouldn't work assuming it's still 1.2v

SIDEBAR: Why do Corsair block their site on a VPN???? Honestly, what are they hoping to protect against?

Hi Martinr36,
Thanks for joining this thread to help assist with my problem.
The 2 x 8 GB , DDR4 2133 MHz modules that I am currently trying to upgrade with are from Amazon as PC Specialist were unable to supply it.
They did advise me that this is what I needed after they supplied me with 2 x 8 GB , DDR4 2666 MHz modules which when inserted had exactly the same no boot up result. The 2666 MHz I returned and was refunded for.

Can you try one at a time, to see if that gets you anywhere? Try both slots as well, independently.

I have to admit I'm absolutely baffled by it , Definitely recommend what Scott said though , Use the 2133mhz kit that you have since that rules out any issues with the ram speed not being supported.

I take it that it just works fine with the old 2x4GB kit that you have.

Hi Scott / Jasontvnd,
I will try out the RAM test as Scott suggests with the original 2133 MHz and the new 2133 MHz modules. It will take a couple of days to get back to you sorry as am tied up with lots of work stuff currently and the bank holiday looming. The original 2133 Mhz modules work just fine without any issue even when my grandson is hammering the laptop on his Fortnite etc. gaming sessions with his school buddies. Speak soon and enjoy the hols.
