Recoil Series 17, third failure...

Guys, I need some advice.. I bought a Recoil Series 17 last year, and for the third time, it failed. The first time was because thermal paste was not doing the job, and the second and now third time was because the screen had failed.. This can't be normal for a laptop that costs 3,000 euros.

This was bought with the intention of gaming but was rarely used, so its not from that.

Has anyone else had this issue, or is this just a bad laptop? What should I do???

I am having the exact same problem with my Recoil 17 series. It started happening on Saturday and concluded after a few minutes, same again Sunday. Today it's been happening the last few hours despite a driver update and a couple of restarts. I only got this laptop in December and haven't even had the time to game on the thing yet, so have barely pushed the boundaries on it. I dread the thought of having to migrate all my files to a new machine again! It took me my whole Christmas holidays to do so. Have never paid anything close to what I paid for this laptop FYI so I've been treating the thing like a priceless museum piece.

For some reason I've come to these forums first but I'm going to have to call up after work. But just to let you know @Nomad69one you're not alone! Scary that this is your third failure though…

You haven't posted the full specs, did you order the liquid cooler?

Have you verified it's not overheating?

That ghosting could be due to overheating GPU rather than a screen issue.

I've pasted the rest. I left it out initially as I thought the software side and webcam etc. was inconsequential. Yes I have the liquid cooler but have not made use of it yet as I haven't been gaming yet.

It shouldn't surely be overheating from casual browsing and filing etc.? Current GPU temp is 44°C.

Current GPU temp is 44°C.
Is the issue currently showing though? You need to monitor temps on both CPU and GPU when the issue is showing. My guess is it's thermal throttling and graphically artifacting as a result.

It is also possible for bad memory to cause graphical artifacting, so if the issue didn't occur alongside high temps, then a full pass with Memtest86 would be the next suggestion.

Without the cooler, you really MUST at the very least underclock the GPU and CPU to be able to use the laptop without significant thermal throttling.

The watercooler is listed as optional, but from most of the reports we've seen and in my humble opinion, it shouldn't be. Without it, the system will invariably throttle, certainly at factory settings.

You can also verify if it is in fact a physical display issue by taking a screenshot when it's present, if the same is visible on the screenshot, then it's a graphics issue, if it's not then it's a physical display issue.

Yes the display issue hasn't stopped since noon, I'm rather straining my eyes just to type this. GPU temp 40-44°C. CPU 49-54°C.

At no stage in using this laptop have I ever thought it was hot or even expelling a high volume of heat out of the fans. Warm at best.

It seems bizarre to me that an OEM would market an optional extra for a product which necessitates the use of said 'extra' in order to function at a baseline.

Does it not void my warranty if I start footering about with CPU clockings?

Screenshots come out no bother, having checked the output on my phone.

No, under clocking can't do any damage except failing to boot as the voltage is too low in which case you just reset the CMOS back to defaults.

It's only overclocking and over voltage that can cause damage.

But if screenshots are indeed coming out with no issue, then that does suggest it's the physical display which is definitely troubling. You'd need to raise an RMA, and I'd suggest pointing them to this thread, perhaps they had a bad batch of screens, or you both are just unlucky, but I'd still make them aware that it's not an isolated issue.

Well thanks for yer responses anyways @SpyderTracks.

I did indeed raise an RMA and have already gone through the whole process so that was a decent turnaround after all (I set the bar low thinking I'd be on my old machine for a month).

It was indeed a faulty screen which has been replaced and is now fully functioning as we speak - on day 1 of operations resuming, so hopefully it sticks. Hoping for the same luck for OP.

So pleased it was a quick turnaround, that’s great to hear!
