Hi all,

Just looking for some advice, i currently have a custom build from PC specialists which was built in 2018, apart from from changing the GPU and RAM everything else is left as but i am thinking about changing the mother board and processor for something newer to try and get as much out of my 2070 super as possible and also i can upgrade to the 3000 series GPU when they become more available.

At the moment i just use the computer for gaming (CoD) and some light Auto CAD ect.

Would people stick with intel or swap to AMD?

my current spec is:

If you do anything with the motherboard all warranty will be null and void, also ig it was specced properly in the first place it should have at least another 5 years in it with just GPU upgrades

I personally wouldn't recommend changing the Motherboard and CPU if you plan on swapping to a 3K Series GPU too. Those parts mentioned are the most significant parts of the build and if you find yourself changing all of them in quick succession you might as well buy a new PC. If you did want to change to an AMD build, I'd recommend a B550 TUF and Ryzen 5 5600X which should set you back about £450.

I think the motherboard will be perfectly adiquate for a 3000 Series GPU. You could upgrade the CPU to up to a i7-9700K without having to change Motherboards. I believe you can still find some new for around £230.

For more minor upgrades there's nothing that's standing out to me. You could change your boot drive to a faster NVME SSD for faster loading into windows, a 970 EVO would be a solid choice. You could also change your 2TB SSHD to an M.2 as I believe the Z370 has dual M.2 ports. Another option is the PSU could be upgraded to an 850W RMx to give you that extra overhead for the new GPU and help your system run more comfortably. If you we're to change your CPU you could also upgrade the AIO cooler to a 240 radiator.

I honestly wouldn’t even bother upgrading it. I can’t imagine that cpu would be bottlenecking a 2070 super much. The case doesn’t have enough intakes to run a super powerful system.

You’d be basically replacing every single component, for very minor gain, if anything though... upgrade to a 9th gen cpu and sell the 8th gen.

Thank you for the detailed response! i am still very new to computer builds so wanted some opinions on another way forward before wasting money for no additional gain. swapping the CPU seems to be the better choice.

Unless you have built pc’s before, a motherboard swap is something to avoid. I can’t imagine their being any really big gains between an 8th and 9th gen cpu.

Best to keep what you have and buy a new system in the future. Potentially sell this build (gpu alone is worth over £600 on used market), as it will still be a fantastic computer for someone @ 1080p. But if you want 1440p, a new build is the way to go.

Let’s not go overboard, you’ll never sell a second hand 2070 for £600! Second hand PC’s don’t hold value well at all.

The 2070 Super is roughly a 3060ti which you can buy new even with the crazy prices now for around £450!
