This was me cleaning a friend's HDD in a bucket of water.

To be fair, said HDD had been in a laptop in 5m of sea water in the marina for an hour. It was in this bucket for two days with regular agitation and regular changes of water. After that it hung in the shade (but in near 30C temperatures) for another two days to dry out. Then it went into my caddy and I pulled all the data off it.

Washing electronic things does sometimes work....!
