Hi specs below. Due to space considerations need to downsize. But don't want a slower PC experience. Would my selection fit the bill ?

To answer the question we need to know what we are comparing it to.

What are your current desktop specs?
What is your intended use? Gaming?

FWIW the 1050 ti will get at least 40fps on high settings at 1080p on most modern AAA games. Some AAA games run even better so you'll get a very good gaming experience.

Hi currently running. Core i5 slightly over clocked but recently returned to factory spec on a gigabyte board. System on a Crucial SSD with a 2TB spinner for storage 8 GB ram Windows 10 . General use internet media some transcoding of video and to manage several TBs of media on several network drives. But want option of some gaming. Due to loss of my office to a nursery am currently crammed in a small area of the bedroom and so a more mobile laptop solution seems best option. Previously owned laptops have always seemed a bit slow. So looking for a bit more oomph ! This time.

Could stretch budget a bit further ceiling probably around £1500. Liked the way I could pick the spec at PC specialist . Colleague at work who builds systems in his spare time , but used to do it for a job said I probably wouldn't need to go for the i7 as the latest i5 should be enough ?

There are quite a few i5s out there, so you may find the laptop i5 to be a downgrade or at best a sideways move.

some transcoding of video

I suppose enough depends on your expectations. But transcoding video is one of the few things i7s outshine i5s in.
