Review: First purchase from PCSPECIALIST - Impressed

This is my first purchase from PCSPECIALIST and first time I got a laptop geared to my specific requirements, which are largely for general office duties, some website design and a lot of offsite work.

I bought an Elimina laptop with i7 Eight core and 32GB Corsair 2400MHz RAM. It has a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 video card, a Soundblaster Cinema sound card, and a 1TB Samsung hard disk.

The screen is excellent and seems to be more vibrant than my last laptop, and the backlit keyboard is a joy to work with, it just has a nice responsive feel that may do not. I like that’s its backlit too, a handy feature for those of us who can spend too much time on the system.

The first thing I noticed is the hard disk is incredibly quick and quiet. A big change from my other laptop. This is my first SSD so maybe this is normal, but for me it is a remarkable change.

Uploading my Antivirus (didn’t buy with laptop), uploaded my application files and I’m up and running, no problems to date.

I went for Win 10 Pro, an essential for me, and will update to the Win 11 equivalent with PCSpecialist when available.

I also upgraded to “Gigabit LAN & killer wi-fi 6 ax1650 M.2 gaming + Bluetooth 5.0” option and “the Arctic MX-4 extreme thermal conductivity compound”. Honestly, I don’t know enough about these to comment on whether they have improved the system, but I can say I am very happy overall so they must be OK.

Before I purchased, I sent the spec to PCSpecialist giving my expected use and asked for recommended changed or upgrades. The advice came back that it was suitable, and no changes would be required for my purposes. I like honest advice.

I’ve used the system to do general work with no bother, including very large spreadsheets that my older laptop struggles with.

I have noticed that when I played a couple of games, Humankind (2021), Tomb Raider (2013) the system gets quite hot, the fan starts and it vents air out the right side. I was surprised at the heat generated as I wouldn’t consider the game requirements especially heavy for the machine. It does stop, I just thought it was a bit surprising.

Also, the battery life is not as good as I expected. Sure, you can close everything down and minimise all battery-based activities to extend time, but I prefer to use the power of the laptop and not have to be ‘careful’ after a period of time. Currently (system new) I’m getting about 80 minutes before the screen dulls. Not bad, but not great either. Just means I plug in more than I probably should have to.

The laptop was very well packaged which was lucky, as there were a few dings on the outside package, but nothing evident on the inner packaging. It came with a small quick start manual and amusingly a drivers CD when the system has no CD player.

There was also a delay in delivery of my laptop, down to the courier service, but worth mentioning as the two-day delivery time is not a given at the moment.

Good:

High quality product.

Easy order process / quick build.

Impartial build advice to suit my usage.

Free upgrade to Win 11 on rollout.

Not as Good:

Battery life shorter than expected.

Delivery was longer than expected (courier issue).

The battery life will be poor if Windows isn't properly configured. Sounds like you may have driver mismatches.
