SEVERE BACKLIGHT BLEEDING on 17.3" Recoil III RTX

Hi everybody,

I recently got the 17.3" Recoil III RTX.

With dark content on the screen, I notice some clearly visible, irregular backlight bleeding along the bottom edge:

This is due to uneven pressure distribution of the frame that surrounds the display ... not to be confused with "IPS glow", which is a phenomenon inherent to IPS technology that usually emanates from the corners.

PC Specialist tells me that this is "regular backlight glow from the screen itself and is present on all this line of laptops we sell".

I find that hard to believe, since it's not the display itself that causes this "from within", but the way the frame / bezel is improperly installed and presses against the display in areas where it shouldn't.

What is your experience with the display on this particular laptop?

Any suggestions how to proceed?

Thanks

UPDATE

It's getting worse:

... more light leaks now from the sides and from the top corners, even though no brightness changes (or other adjustments) were made.

This is visible on any background that isn't very bright, and interferes with any kind of work involving dark visual content.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I think you need to talk to PCS, these fora are not an official support channel.

Sometimes this happens where the bezel is on a little too tight I think and PCS can talk you through loosening it but I'd talk to them before doing anything.

UPDATE

PCS agreed to an RMA based on the display issues previously described, and so I returned the laptop for their technicians to take a look at it.

For the RMA, I specified that this problem is evidently (= visibly) caused by an improperly installed bezel that permanently presses against the display in areas where it shouldn't, and that any work involving dark visual content is noticeably impaired by this, especially since the light leaks on the left side are more than twice as bright as the one on the right.

I also therefore specifically asked PCS: "Can your technicians properly align the bezel to the display, so these lighting anomalies disappear?"

Two weeks later I received the following response from PCS:

"After inspection of the system we can confirm that we see the backlight bleeding in a dark room. However, the system does not suffer from backlight issues in an illuminated room. When we compare this to the specifications of the chassis as defined by the manufacturer, we find that the system meets these specifications and that this [backlight bleeding] is no defect. Please let us know how you would like to proceed."

In other words: Yes, it's there, but it's not considered a problem, just don't use your laptop in the dark.

I am now somehow between a rock and a hard place: I can take back the laptop as it is and have to live with these backlight issues for years, or ... ?

Frankly, I am actually surprised that this level of backlight irregularity is considered acceptable, and that apparently PCS is not willing or able to fix it.

Any suggestions how to proceed?

Kind regards,

Dan

I would phone them and ask them to confirm that the bezel is correctly installed (since that's what you think the problem is). If they say that it is, and you're not happy with that, then I would return it for a refund and look at buying a different model of laptop. You definitely don't want to be spending large amounts of money for a laptop you're not completely happy with.

UPDATE

A few more e-mails went back and forth between me and PCS.

I really had to insist that there was in fact a real problem from my point of view, and once more had to ask specifically if PCS considered the bezel to be properly installed as it was, or if an attempt at fixing it had actually been made.

Eventually, due to my concerns, PCS technicians agreed to replace part of the screen, in an attempt to mitigate the problem before returning the laptop back to me.

I do not know what exactly was replaced or what else was done to fix this, but it is definitely better now than it was before. There is still minor backlight bleeding at the bottom of the screen, but not as irregular and not as bright as it used to be. In this condition it's acceptable.

I am glad it turned out this way, even though with PCS I really had to put some effort, persistence and a very clear and unequivocal choice of words into making sure that this was acknowledged as an actual problem.

That said, thank you very much for your support.

If any other technical problem arises, I now know where I can find help.

I’m very pleased they did address it even if it took some stern words, and pleased that it’s improved your experience and satisfaction. It’s worth pushing for what you need as this thing will be used probably daily for years to come and it’s important you don’t have things like this at the back of your mind throughout that time.

im glad it’s resolved for you.

I'm happy you got it sorted too. I can appreciate that the level of bleed was a matter of opinion but it's great news that PCS understood that the customer is always right. [emoji106]

Whilst I agree entirely that it is subjective, I'd struggle to say that the levels of bleed in the original photos was acceptable.
