Shall I return this laptop due to temps??

Hi

Got my gaming laptop (specs in my sig) a week or 2 ago and been noticing its getting very hot when I game.
I'm not the best with tech but been doing a lot of research to lower them and checking temps etc.

The cpu is hitting 89-91° and is throttling a lot.
I've followed a guide to use intel undervolt but this has done little to nothing with the high temps and throttling of the cpu.

I don't want or think I should have to put new or better paste on the cpu so thinking I should just call pc specialist to fix???

I've not done anything other than try lower temps safely but getting quite down as this is ruining gaming and the reason why I ordered the thing

It does appear hot to me from the numbers you've quoted, but I'm not fully up to speed with what really constitutes hot these days, if its throttling during gaming I'd agree that's not good - if its a bad paste job, I'm sure PCS will sort it for you if you got in touch. You would need to send back the laptop, you might be able to do it yourself depending on how confident you feel.

Yeah they slow down a few games and not really acceptable imo

Ill call them as im happy enough to attempt to replace the thermal paste but only if im not held responsible lol
If I am id rather they just do it tbh

Quite a few people seem to be having problems with that model unfortunately. In your position I would probably play it safe and return for a refund.

I'd agree 100% with Oussebon, there would appear to be an issue with that model, I'd send it back if it were mine.

I'd add a third agreement to send it back.

If you search the forums, there's been a lot of talk around this model about heat and throttling and is sounding very much like either a defective product line, or at least one that currently has significant defects.

It depends on the specs you want. The Proteus would be the obviously alternative sporting a 1070. We haven't had many reviews of it on the forums but someone else who posted about the Defiance being a big disappointment didn't complain about the Proteus they said they owned.

Just called Pcspecailist and was told my 17" model isn't the one with the thermal issues and not known to be overly hot for a gaming laptop.

Said my cpu temps are unusually high while gaming.
Its being picked up tomorrow and ill see if they can fix/replace the paste and cooling systems.

Soon as I get it back I'll test it out on a few games and if still throttling and hot ill be saying I want a full replacement with different design.

But guy on phone said the one with the major issues was a Defiance 15" and different model which they dont sell now.

We'll see but suppose I cant lose...either its fixed and im happy or its not and ill take it further and demand replacement order.

Thanks and ill update when I get it back....gonna be a loooooong few weeks waiting :(

Thanks.

Mine is 17" and the one you've said looks to be 15" only.
But thanks for the advice and help.

Hopefully I get my 17" defiance fixed and no issues or ill have to get a different model

They did seem to withdraw the 15.6" model. But unfortunately a lot of people have posted about problems with their 17.3" since then.

Presumably not everyone has had the same experience or else there would be even more posts about this on the forums I suppose. No idea how many of these PCS sell, but it must be a pretty large qty.

Yeah I'm a little worried and disappointed atm but if this repair comes back and still getting hot ill just say I want a different model.
Im pretty sure at that point I would be allowed to exchange if it cant handle playing games at its default cpu speeds etc.

Under the Consumer Rights Act you have a legal right to reject goods that are of unsatisfactory quality, unfit for purpose or not as described, and get a full refund - as long as you do this quickly.

This right is limited to 30 days from the date you take ownership of your product. After 30 days, you will not be legally entitled to a full refund if your item develops a fault, although some sellers may offer you an extended refund period.

Thanks for the info

The laptop was picked up today and will be tested and repaired by PCS.
As soon as I get it back I'll be heavily testing and if a still getting to hot I'll call and demand a different model built totally as I don't want a refund....just a working gaming laptop.

It's 14 days old today so hopefully repaired and back to me before the 30 you've stated....although if still faulty I'll get the full replacement by kicking off if need be.
But so far as are PCS have handled things well

Does the 30 days still run if the laptop is in for repairs or does the timer stop once a return is issued and continues once returned to customer?

I was going to go for the 17" Defiance with a 8850 cpu but was put off with heating problems people reported. I went with the 17" octane instead without any thermal problems playing games mostly on ultra settings.

No idea tbh but mine should be back later this week and if it's not working perfectly and acceptable temps I'll be returning.
Even if over 30 days I don't care as most of the 30 is with them!!

Ok quick update

Laptop has been with PCS for a week....and they have done NOTHING to it.
Been calling last 2 days and been told both times "it's will be started today" and still nothing.

If by tomorrow midday nothing has been started I'm going to demand it cancelled

It took 5 days from payment to despatch but now there's an issue they don't care it seems.

Looking at the return on PCS the laptop is 21 days old including me waiting for repair etc.
What are my rights to say I don't want a repair and want a new build or refund??

I almost want to scrap this one and maybe order a different style laptop as I'm worried now about future over heating issues and the shambolic returns on an old system let alone a new one!!

I would phone them and explain the situation again and ask politely but firmly for either a cancellation or replacement.

If they argue you could point them at this very thread / their own forums because as Oussebon says, there have been other reports of the 17" model having similar/the same issues.

Ultimately the device doesn't appear fit for purpose and it falls on the seller to prove otherwise.
