Shorter Cables?

Hello all,

Ive just plugged in my 2nd GTX 580 that I got from PCS this morning (thanks PCS), but due to the extra PCIE express cables needed for the power supply, its extremely messy inside the pc and is restricting airflow from the front mounted fan at the bottom. Top card at idle is running at 54C and the bottom 36C with fans 90%

Is there any where I can get shorter PSU to PCIE cables? I also have the maelstrom t900 case and the cable that connects the large side mounted fan to the power supply is also fairly large and has about 3 unused connectors that are getting in the way, is there any thing I can do about this? Sorry I dont really know what all the different cables and connections are actually called!

Thanks

Dan

Does the Maelstrom have any cable management grommets? If not, you'll have to use cable ties to get them out the way of airflow. I have my cables tied to the back of the HDD cage in my case :)

That picture kind of shows what i mean, using cable ties and tieing them to the HDD cage :)

Thanks for the quick answer. Unfortunately I cant see anyway to cable tie them out the way. But will take another look. Thanks

Oh and no, no grommets.

With regards to the cable that connects the side fan to the psu, can the unused connections be cut off?

Erm no not a good idea at all :nono: tbh the small spare molex connectors will not be stopping much airflow in there anyway, i think you will find your biggest problem is the small case you have with so much in there especially 2 GTX580's and i can't remember the connections on your motherboard but you might have another PCI-E slot you can use to seperate the cards.

There are 3 pcie slots on the board but the third is level with the psu so can't use it. There is a 3cm gap between the two cards tho.

I've found a cable in the welcome pack that only has two connections so I will use that instead to connect up the side fan.

3cm gap that should not be too bad then for airflow, i forgot to mention before that the top card on an SLI setup will run about 10-15 degrees hotter than the lower card but the fans should not be running anywhere near 90% at idle.

That was me bumping up the fan speed with afterburner. Was between 30 and 40% initially but temps were climbing.

currently steady at 54C and 45C with fans at 42% and 41% respectively. The PC is temporarily set up in the kitchen/living area which is not the most coolest of rooms. I take it this looks pretty normal?

Yeah for 2 GTX580's in that case they will run hot but those temps are nothing to worry about what you will be best doing is checking what temps they run up to on a game and let us know make sure you leave the fans on auto.

Thanks guys

+1 rep :)

Got a similar issue, same GPUs. When running 3 monitors and in gaming one GPU will be at around 54'C and the second one at 97'C. If you notice a big difference in temperatures between the 2 cards you may start having problems, I think the palit cards will reset when they hit 97'C. At iddle with fans at 33% I get 47'C and 40'C, try to keep an eye on the temperatures when gaming.

Did you notice any difference or have any problems with one card at 97C?

I'd still like to get shorter PSU to PCIE express 6 + 2 pin power cables if anyone knows any where to get them if only to make the inside a little neater.

Yes, the card will just reset when it hit 97'C, got some feedback from NVIDIA and was told that if the card hits 90 or above it could be a hardware issue which in my case was (faulty GPU).
