hello i've got on order a AMD OC Ryzen 9 5950X / ASUS ROG STRIX X570-F / 64GB Corsair 3200MHz (4x16)

my options are:-

1. stay with this set up as i'll get a good overclock and not need to change anything

2. get better RAM like 3600MHz and in 2 sticks, (side Q I can only see 32GB options at 3600MHz is there a reason for not having 64Gb or 128Gb options?)

3. don't bother with the 570 motherboard and drop it to a B550 and use the money saved to get 128GB 3000MHz as i'm never gonna get a great overclock unless i get much much better Ram and a better mobo like the Hero?

anyway I'm kinda on a budget the PC so far has cost around 3.1k and I'll be using it for heavy render tasks with a need for at least 64GB of Ram..would love 128 but heard the 5950X loves 3200 speed RAM and higher

anyway i'm a noob when it comes to overclocks and the need or not for curtain speed RAM any info would be appreciated

Cheers DMC

Hi there, I’m not very clued up on PC’s for your use so won’t be able to help too much. That said, whoever does help will need your full build to assist. (How to post this can be found here).

You cant drop the motherboard, its the minimum you would want to be putting a 5950X on, and I would have a think about overclocking as in general the built in OC AMD comes with will give most a better performance.

You will also want to be keeping 3200MHz or 3600MHz RAM with AMD and ideally 4 sticks on a 5000 series.
The slight catch is 4 sticks 3600MHz is a little buggy (AMD are apparently aware and a fix is expected...no idea when though) so 3200MHz may be an easier option for you unless you want to underclock 3600MHz RAM a little to stabilise it.
Perhaps 32GB 3600MHz as two sticks and you look to purchase two more if you find it needs it? and then in BIOS you can step down the clock on it to 4

What are your actual uses (programs being used, level of use if hobby/professional etc) and what else are you going to use the system for?
Did you get any help making the spec off people on the forums?
You seem to be doing a few things that arent generally good ideas...

Whats your budget, whats the monitor, whats the uses and what specific programs need considering?

Hi Junior cheers my current build is ..micro size like your footnote, large size spec in post below

Case: Thermaltake Core X71 CPU: 5950X GPU: 6700XT Motherboard: ROG STRIX X570-F RAM: 64Gb (4x16Gb) 3200MHz Storage: 250GB SSD + 250Gb M2 & 10TB HDD PSU: Corsair 850W RMx CPU Cooler: Corsair H115i Monitor: 1X Samsung Tv 40" @1080p

Thanks SIBUN1 for the reply and info...so best case would be not change anything then......keep mobo and 3200 ram as is.....and give up on OC and leave it to AMD Precision Boost 2 .....ok cheers sir.
As for it's use, heavy multi-core and sustained workloads like "Phoenix FD" particle simulations they can use a lot of RAM and is up and down with the CPU load...also "Vray" for "3dmax" and that's 100% load on all cores.......don't need great GPU..hence the cheap end 6700xt (only one available but will do), only running 1080p, don't need much space as I have a NAS...budget is around 3k ..but so far is £3100...spec was just me, and my first post/time on the forums....oh and this rig is for semi-pro 3D work.

cheers again DMC

PS, seams the only thing PC Specialist didn't have in stock at the time of ordering (10 days ago) was the AMD 5950X so I could be waiting for this rig for awhile...giving the current state of the Semiconductor drought :(

Have you considered other GPU's? 1660 Super, 3060... cheaper than the 6700XT and might still be suited to what you need it for (which is placed between 3060 Ti and 3070)

yep...but the 1660 super is the only one in stock atm..and I suppose we can't take that at face value considering my experience with the 6700XT...so I don't know..might be just as long waiting for a 3060Ti or something....which is kinda what I wanted from the start......but at this point I really don't know the best card to pick to hope I get it in a timely manner.......many I'm sure are in the same boat :(

It's a bit of a strange time to buy unfortunately. The next iteration of Threadripper is out soon. At the moment, I probably wouldn't recommend the TR with the new chips due out, cost and the fact that the 5950X is just a beast of a CPU.

The lack of Hero motherboard is a bit of a disappointment. You are limited with RAM selections with the AM4 socket as well, so you have a lot to ponder.

I concur with the GPU assessment and your storage options seem a little off. I've copied most of it across with higher performance in mind, but I would go over the storage with what you are actually looking for. You mentioned having NAS available yet selected an expensive 10GB HDD? Is the 250GB drive for cache? If so, a second M2 with blistering speeds would be beneficial, as below.

I wouldn't go with that case either. It's a high end spend with not a lot going for it. If you need an optical drive I would opt for a removable USB3 drive. Noone really uses internal drives anymore and manufacturers are phasing them out.

Case
CORSAIR 5000D AIRFLOW TEMPERED GLASS GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16 Core CPU (3.4GHz-4.9GHz/72MB CACHE/AM4)
Motherboard

Graphics Card
6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1660 SUPER - HDMI, DP - GeForce GTX VR Ready!

Would a Threadripper build not be better for the use case?
Good idea.... but just looked ...a similar build is like £1500 more so way out of my budget but still a TR would be more sorted for what i do..but going by Scott not the best time to get one even if I could..

Cheers Scott ..good find with the case... didn't see that before..Nice.......I'll change to that..and yes your storage selection might be a better option too :) thank you sir for taking the time. :)

edit..looks like I can't change my case as my build is the OC amd version..not regular that has that case as an option....weird

I would call up and change it, or do so via the chat. I wouldn't recommend going for the OC option :)

ok called them....looks like my only option is to cancel the order and start again....so before i do that is there not a good pc case under the OC amd options...other then the huge THERMALTAKE CORE X71...i've been looking at case reviews and they all seam ok..but not amazing..even the CORSAIR 5000D that you spec'ed is well got it's problems, going by what i could see in reviews..and if anything the CORE X71 has got loads of internal room over others? only other one that I was looking at was the Cooler Master H500

As said, I wouldn't opt for the OC option. You won't gain anything from.
