Slow laptop

Hello everyone,

I wonder if anyone can advise. My laptop has been running very slowly after startup for a while. There were various problems which I think I've improved on but now the disk usage is stuck on 100% for 10-15 minutes after startup and everything is very slow. Later on the disk usage reduces and things speed up a bit.

I've tried many things suggested online, including turning off various windows services and defragging the disk but none of these seem to make much difference.

I wonder if anyone has come across this problem and found a solution?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Is this a PCSpecialist system? Can you post your full specs from the order page?

As above, but it sounds as though your HDD needs some TLC.

First run a disk cleaner to remove garbage and temp files. The Windows disk cleanup tool works ok but there are third party tools that are more thorough.

Next archive to an external drive, or delete, all those files you no longer use often or at all. Start with the larger files (videos in particular) first. You really don't want an HDD more than about 70% full.

Finally defragment the drive. The Windows defragment tool is ok but there are third party tools that do a much better job.

Thanks for these replies and for your advice, Ubuysa. Much appreciated.

My apologies if this forum is only for PC Specialist purchases, I thought it was for general use. Having said that, maybe I should consider getting a new laptop!

I have run disk cleaners including CC Cleaner and have done defrag. I have 450MB of disk and 300MB is unused, so about 33% full. Does that suggest it's not a defrag problem? The disk usage also drops right down after laptop runs for a while.

As said, it's not something we can really advise on, Tom's Hardware are excellent though.

If anything, just replacing the drive would likely be all that's required, an SSD is almost a given these days anyway, will improve performance astronomically.
