Hi All

This was announced yesterday and completely forgot to post it.

AMD have enabled SAM (Smart Access Memory) on some Ryzen 3000's CPU's paired with RX6000 GPU's, so won't work with any of the RX5000 or RX500 GPU's unfortunately.

It can add a few percent in gaming performance (FPS), but has very few downsides, so it's worth enabling by default.

The current hardware criteria is:
  • An AMD 500-series motherboard (B550 / X570)
  • Ryzen 5000 or 3000 CPU
  • RX 6000 graphics card
I fully expect this compatibility to grow knowing AMD, they're more known for adopting older tech into new features than Intel.

Some benchmark comparisons with the benefits of SAM below:

And the AMD initial announcement for some further explanation:

Will this require a motherboard BIOS update?

If so, will there be an official PCS 'okay' to go ahead and do this, or will everyone have to ask PCS on an individual basis and add extra work to their already overworked helpdesk?

(obviously not asking for me, as I've got an Nvidia GPU)

You’d have to ask PCS for a BIOS update as normal. I doubt there will be many with 3000 series cpu and 6000 GPU, would have though most will have gone for 5000 series CPU’s at this level.
