Spec for desktop replacement

Having direct family in different countries, as explained in another thread, planning to become far more mobile between the 2 and add extra travelling in between.

My current set up is an i7KF, 32GBRam, 3080 10GB, msi mobo, liquid cooling, m2 + ssd + HDD storage solutions, playing on a 1440p setting curved monitor.

Knowing that laptop GPU models will never compare to the desktop counterpart of the same name, this is what I'm planning to do in terms of a laptop purchase.

I'm guessing still downgrade compared to the desktop, but would like to know how much of a downgrade is it.

If you can afford it and serioulsy want a laptop as a desktop replacement, go for the 17" Recoil with the 300 Hz display and a full blown processor rather than a cut down wannaba. You also get the option to have four M2 memory cards.

Recoil itself is unavailable for another 2 days, cutting too close to my departure time between build time and all that.

3080 is also unavailable until august itself, no use for me

is at 1080

already at £2.7k without touching the storage and delivery bits

the wannabe will have to do i think

There is (possibly) a third option here.

Might not be your thing but recently having similar weighing up and options re a latest gen gaming laptop I discovered a thing or two in my research.

Basically, unlike the last two (10xx and 20xx) gen Nvidia GPU's the high end of this gens laptop ones are even further away re performance from their desktop counterparts. And that's before taking heat and throttling into account with power/TDP going up and the chassis themselves getting ever thinner (my old laptop, below, was bad enough for heat/noise) Honestly, unless you're happy to pay for greater diminishing returns than before (and can't/won't undervolt/repaste aso) I'd be happy going for lower spec in the case of 30xx equipped laptops. On the bright side (for those admittedly few/low selection of games as have it) while I'm not the biggest fan of it, you'll have DLSS to notch things up from the lower base perf/power needs of a 3060ti or so (good for mid 1440p/high 1080p before DLSS)

As it happened, I had to draw a line in the sand and went for a whole new uber desktop instead (below) of a not so big upgrade for the older one and a newer laptop replacing the old (those having 6700K/8750H and 144Hz 1080 ultrawide/120Hz 1080p respectively and both with a 1070) I could actually afford a 3070 laptop and some decent level of desktop upgrade but that was also underwhelming re the laptops performance(s) under load for the money against the old laptop. For the odd week/fortnight away though, the old laptop will do.

Anyway, just something to consider maybe. If you have the money spare go for the big guns but you will need to undervolt/carry a cooling pad etc at least.

Purpose of use:

Main game currently is destiny 2, alongside vintage games such as aom extended edition, and star wars: the old republic. I do however buy the odd shining new triple A, and liking to play on high settings, due to:

Reason of purchase: have direct family in 2 different countries (italy and uk) writing this from italy on a 840m laptop with a busted speaker, while uk has a desktop sporting a 3080 build, also potentially looking at work in other parts of uk, which would require me even more mobility. I'm already aware that laptop wise I'm looking at a downgrade from said desktop unless i splurge some 3k or so.

2 quotes I'm looking at:

Posting up some minor changes. I would definitely opt for the AMD myself. You would get a little more gaming performance from the Intel but not enough to warrant the power efficiency. To the naked eye they will both perform similarly.

The storage selections were quite strange so I've gone with a more conventional approach. Just in case it was something you had done deliberately. Primary drive for OS & programs only, second drive for games, fast storage & cache if needed.

I'd go with @Scott selection too, but my advice has always been for a laptop that costs that much to up the warranty to the GOLD warranty for only £69 as that gives you two years on parts.

Laptops can run very hot and the chassis / motherboard are quite expensive due to GPU usually being soldered on as part of it.

I agree with @Scott , the only thing we don't know is the TDP of the 3080 in both of @justafolk 's options. I would expect the Recoil to be the biggest wattage available, but maybe I'm wrong. Also, expect it to be a very noisy boy. Not saying that the Valeon will be quiet, but definitely less noisy than the Recoil.

Me again... still looking at the valeon...
Is its keyboard mechanical?
It doesn't look like it, at least looking at the pictures. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't look like PCS has any mechanical keyboard at the moment?

I can't remember which was the previous model to have the "faux" mechanical switches, but they had quite a few issues and needed to be pressed at a certain angle or just didn't register keystrokes. I believe that was one of the models that was pulled fairly quickly.

interested in knowing:
the TDP of the 3070
where would the processor sit, compared to 11800H and 5900x.
and if anyone has already got one, and is they got any feedback of sorts.

Questions:

seeing the option to buy 2 power bricks - does it need both plugged in to function at 100%? ( see alienware area 51-m )

Budget not being an issue, is the 3080 worth the £ 300 (and the wait) over the 3070? video comparisons only give it a few fps above the 3070, and a far smaller jump compared to 3070v3060

seeing a lot about the killer vs intel wifi cards atm, drivers and all that. Which one to go for?

Yes, you need both power bricks.

EDIT: VALEON ONLY REQUIRES ONE POWER BRICK, APOLOGIES

3080 is up to 10% improvement, only you can say weather that's worth it or not.

I would suggest Killer although they've been bought out by intel now anyway

There are some problems with killer and W11 at the moment, causing slower speeds, download on my laptop which has the KILLER™ Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 installed is showing download speeds about half that of my phone (galaxy z fold 2) under W11, when i was on W10 they were pretty much identical

Is that killer specifically or just the realtek chipsets?

I have the Valeon with the RTX 3070 and the Killer nic and the RTX 3080 is just 5-7 % faster than the 3070 due to thermals and wattage . As for the Killer wifi card , in Windows 10 I have not had any issues with it. It gives good coverage and speed. It does have it`s own software aimed towards gaming . The keyboard is not mechanical , but still decent . I`ve not used it much as I`m using an external one . There has been some complaints on Tong Fang chassis about fading keys on the keyboards , and Valeon might be affected . For the money it is a high performing bit of hardware , but quality wise ( materials ) it might feel a bit cheap compared to other brands .

power bricks: 2x for 3080 and 1x for 3070? or both will need 2? that's such a put off, idk..
