Strange issue with Samsung DVD writer

I upgraded cpu and board some weeks ago. My 5+ years old Samsung DVD writer was working fine on the old set up. On the new one it shows up in BIOS and in "This PC" and is getting powered (tray opens/closes normally.) It does not read DVDs that work fine on my laptop. I enter discs and it spins but never shows contents of it. Any help would be useful. The motherboard is Gigabyte H97M-DS3P. I will change SATA port to a different one in about an hour. One more thing. Previously the optical drive was connected to the PSU directly, now it is connected using a molex to SATA adaptor.

Update: I changed SATA port and used different SATA cable. It reads CDs (it maybe be reading CDs perviously but not DVDs i did't check) but still doesn't read DVDs that work fine on a laptop. I guess it is dying.
