Swapping a power supply

Last week whilst browsing the internet my power-supply sparked and tripped the whole room and refused to turn on afterwards. Knowing it’s Christmas which would affect RMA times I looked into the problem and I think it is just an issue with the power supply.
I brought a new power-supply identical to the old one and have temporarily plugged it in from the outside of the case, with the original idea for it to last me until the end of the holidays. Computer turns on fine now with no issues.
I am now wondering if I could skip the RMA step and just wire in the new powersupply, would it be wise to do? And would it affect my warranty at all? And if I were to need an RMA at a later date would I need to cable in the old one?

Sorry, but no staff from PCS usually look at those forums, it's user-based. So unfortunately I cannot say how that will affect your warranty, and my recommendation is to get in touch with them directly to get your confirmation. You can do that by your account section on the website (might take 2 or 3 days to receive a reply) or by calling them (they're quite busy at the moment, so be aware that the queue might be big)

The BSOD Doctor
Well, in the Terms & Conditions it says this...

7.8 Unlike with most computer companies, we allow you to open your case and install your own components without voiding your warranty on the following conditions:

  • If the actions of the person installing the components cause damage to the computer, your warranty will be void;
  • If you install components that are not purchased from us and they cause problems with your computer, your warranty will be void;
  • If you install components that are not purchased from us we will in no way support you in installing them or with any problems you have relating to the components you have installed.
  • We will support you in installing components purchased from us providing you have purchased them through the upgrade service available on your online account.

And yes, if it needed an RMA you'd need to refit the original PSU.
