hi

so i have a new system from PCS - the motherboard is ROG STRIX Z390-F GAMING BIOS 0805. I have not touched any settings in bios since bought, nor have i installed any overclocking tools as im not interested (at the moment) as works fine.

Problem: Since yesterday on boot, under the logo it now say "Overclock 38%" - can anybody help me determine why / how this has happened, also what i may need to do to put back to 'normal'? thanks Jamie

Can you post your full specs from the order page?

So worth contacting PCS when you can about updating the BIOS, you're on quite an old version and there have been microcode security updates, plus better stability improvements since your version. I don't think that's connected to this issue, but worth doing when you get a chance.

If you boot into the BIOS, there's normally a screen with some set overclocking profiles, usually like game, turbo, high performance... stuff like that. Just see if they're set and if so disable any overclock.

That's the only thing I can think it may be unless it is a bug with the BIOS.

Can you take a photo of the screen when you're booting and post it?

It could just be Asus screwing with you.

38% overclock is massive on a 9700k.

Unless, of course, the motherboard needs to find ways to justify its existence in a crowded an boring marketplace. And does things like reporting boost clocks as an overclock. The base clock being 3.6GHz and the boost clock being ~4.9GHz, which is very close to 38%. Baseless accusation there but I wouldn't put it past Asus.

It's always possible there is some super minor OC.

Did you install Asus AI Suite?

Has the BCLK value gotten changed from 100 somehow?

Download and install HWMonitor, run it and see what your frequency is sitting at.

My initial guess is exactly as above. ASUS are at it.

thanks guys much appreciated , here are the pics.

I'll have a look now - its not straightforward where the 'off' setting is, will have a look - if there is any guide to point me to would be grateful!

ill raise a case with PCS now thanks Jamie

So the XMP overclock is on the memory to boost it to 3200MHz, that's fine, that's what's expected.

The rest I can't see any overclock applied, and the BClk is at 100 so shouldn't be applying any forced overclock.

I do think it's Asus trying to sound big and clever as the others have suggested.

Can you go onto the "Main" page of the bios and take a photo?

Hmmm, by the HWInfo readout, it does appear that all the cores are at 5GHz which would suggest an OC, but I'm not sure if it reports their max turbo boost capability as the current max which is entirely possible. Best wait for someone else to confirm.

re: "Did you install Asus AI Suite? " -it came with armoury crate installed, however i've uninstalled some of the sub-apps within it live overwolf etc. Doesnt seem any easy way to disable or change as the AI overclock tuner setting can be set to 'manual' but then most other sub setting revert to Auto .

Just to add, an overclock won't do anything negative to the system, it's not like the old days where it reduced the lifespan of the CPU, Intel CPU's are designed to be overclocked and chips like the 9900KS are simply an overclocked 9900k out of the box. It will just boost performance generally.

That's definitely an overclock. Not sure why the motherboard has done that. It will help performance and it's a mild overclock so if it runs ok I would stick with it.

The 9700k boosts to 4.9 so 5ghz across all cores simultaneously is most definitely an OC. Perhaps PCS did it thinking you had purchased an OC system 😁

The per core ratio is set to 50

I can't remember OTTOMH which setting to change. Core Ratio to Auto?

As for how this happened, at a guess, the Asus software suite.

Looks like it's the AI overclock XMP1 default setting. It's likely meant to be just the RAM that has been configured to XMP1, rather than the entire system.

TBH I would leave it like that. It's a reasonable OC and everything will be handled safely. Run HW monitor and put it through its paces with your normal workloads, maybe even taking it a little to excess. Have a look at your temperatures once you are done, if everything is under 90 C then I would be quite happy personally. Obviously the lower the better though. The H100X should perform admirably for the 9700K.

thanks again for help - as long as it wont harm the system, ill see what PCS support come back with and ill do some research on settings. Odd as i haven't applied any settings in windows to instigate tweaks or overclock settings.

Been running Red dead 2 no problems circa 45ish FPS at 1080p with graphics settings optimised by NVIDIA geforce experience app - thats the most test its had. also resident evil 2 and GTA5 no problems so far. its my 2nd PCS system so far and its a brilliant system! (thanks again to
OUSSEBON with help on spec when bought)

Just as a note, I wouldn't let GeForce experience apply graphical settings, it's needlessly agressive to the point it massively hampers performance for no reason.
