The Story of My Idiocy

Have you ever been in a situation where you've done something and then realised a few moments later that you're a total idiot? Was it tech related?

I was in that situation just the other day, I got my lovely brand new PC from PCSpecialist (thank you, PCS!) and had to connect it all up and install the new GPU - along with the cables to power it.

My first bit of idiocy was to note that there were PCIe power cables in the welcome box and to assume that I needed to plug these in to the PSU as I'd bought my PC is Semi-modular. So I set about trying to fiddle about in the case to try and plug the cables in, after 10 minutes, I start getting a bit frustrated and wonder if I might need some help, I look up and from the top cable management portal, I spy a bunch of cables, including a PCIe power cable, cue much facepalming.

My second bit of idiocy came when I tried turning it all on, I get a beep code, so I decide to check the mobo guide booklet I got, it says that the beeps mean "no VGA present" - which I find a little odd, as the mobo doesn't have a VGA port and the CPU doesn't have integrated graphics and I've plugged in the HDMI cable going from my GPU to my monitor. Confused, I decide to try the PCS tech support helpline, I go through it with the guy on the phone, and I'm starting to get desperate as I wonder if I've bricked my PC, and as I look at the back of my monitor I note that the HDMI cable that I thought was plugged in, was in fact, sitting on my desk, waiting to be plugged in.

Cue much embarrassment and an apology for taking up the valuable time of a tech. Oh and to top it all off, I WORK ON A SERVICE DESK! Doubly embarrassing!

Anyway I hope my misfortune made you smile a little.

I had a cracker today......

I've been coming to my current place of work since around 2012. I never ever felt that "Autopilot" mode kick in properly until today. Got into work, parked up quite the thing. I was about to get out of the car when a little voice said "Why are we here Daddy?". Oops! Best go and drop my daughter off with her Nana I guess. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I do that stuff all the time. Mini heart attack when the PC won't switch on at all after I changed something inside.

Ofc the kettle lead isn't plugged back in, or it is but the PSU switch is O instead of I...

when a little voice said
Sign of an (uncharacteristically?) peaceful car journey?

Alas it was a 6.15 rise for the little monkey, she sits fairly silent in the car.... half asleep. She had my phone so was playing around with that hence the peace/calm :D

Auto pilot mode has happened more than a few times, generally when driving, but I've also gone auto-pilot whilst cycling to work, going to my old office which is a mile further down the road from my current office, now admittedly it was in the first few weeks of me starting in the new office and it hasn't happened since. Doesn't help that there is a big hill that I had to go back UP to get to current office, felt like a right twit.

My journey to work involves a ~20 min walk after a long series of public transport connections. I sometimes find myself during the walk suddenly paying attention to my surroundings and going "where the heck am I?!".

I'm in the right place, I've just got so used to autopiloting the journey on foot and paying it no mind that I can't even remember what the route looks like :S

I just spent close to a minute confused and frustrated by why I couldn't get rid of the screenshots on this post:

I was clicking on the the top right X of a screenshot window, not a local-to-me window. The struggle is real.

My dad (a man I hugely admired) used to tell me that 'a man who never made a mistake never made anything'.

As a corollary to that, John F Kennedy once said that 'an error does not become a mistake until to you refuse to correct it'

Don't feel bad, mistakes are what tell us that we're human. :)
