Thinking about brand new build...

Hi all

I took the plunge on a gaming PC back in 2012 with the following build:

Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i5-2500 Quad Core (3.30GHz, 6MB Cache) + HD Graphics
Motherboard ASUS® P8Z68-V: USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs, NVIDIA®SLI™, ATI®CrossFireX
Memory (RAM) 8GB SAMSUNG DDR3 DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (2 X 4GB)
Graphics Card 1.25GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 570 - 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready
1st Hard Disk 1TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD1002FAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm)
Power Supply CORSAIR 650W ENTHUSIAST SERIES™ TX650 V2 - 80 PLUS® BRONZE

Since then, I have put in a GTX970 and an SSD and got a considerable improvement on performance.

Am I right in saying that with this motherboard my CPU upgrade options are limited? Also I would like to get the GTX980TI (should have been more patient and waited)

Would I be crazy to build a new system? I want to game at 1440P with a fast FPS and want a system that is future proof. The system I have now performs well but I feel my options in future may become more limited.

Thoughts?

I was thinking of getting the following build (budget is approx £1500 and I can sell my current GTX 970 and SSD):

Case
COOLERMASTER CM690 III ADVANCED CASE (GREEN)
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-4790k (4.0GHz) 8MB Cache
Motherboard
ASUS® Z97-PRO GAMER: ATX, USB3.0, SATA 6GB/S, SLi, XFIRE
Memory (RAM)
16GB KINGSTON HYPER-X FURY DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 980 Ti - DVI, HDMI, 3 DP
1st Hard Disk
500GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 540MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
2nd Hard Disk
2TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 64MB CACHE
3rd Hard Disk
1TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD1003FZEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm)
Power Supply
CORSAIR 850W RM SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Processor Cooling
Corsair H80i GT Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler

Thanks in advance!

if I were you I stick with your old system and add the gtx 980 ti and an SSD. I doubt you will get any noticeable improvement from an i5-2500 to an i7-4790k.

Thanks for the advice! What about the CPU? Is it not massively out of date?

I think for gaming it should cope without issues. I don't really think you should get a new build if it is mainly for gaming. You can't really futureproof since every new CPU usually requires a new socket and new motherboard.
