Is there a specific reason you want an Intel CPU ?

there are a number of reasons not to go Intel at moment.

An M.2 drive is a good investment in performance.

Cooling looks rather weak.

one of the forum experts will come along at some point.

as you have said what monitor is being used and type of use, the next thing will be what’s your budget.

increase the warranty to next level.

Ram is high unless you use that for work stuff, games do not need that much, MSFS is main hog and that’s 32gb.

There’s a few things I’d change... but can I ask what your budget is, types of games you’ll be playing, and what ‘work’ constitutes?

Work. HyperV and running a 8 or more vms each with 2 to 4gb ram. Hence memory and fast ssd.

gaming. Cod modern warfare, battle field. Hence 3080 and new monitor to take advantage of it

intel coz im usually down with intel. But i am reading good things about amd.

cooling - never gone water cooled, dont want high maintenenace cooling just fans. Not concerned with niose. Im deaf as a post

Ta for the info, helps me get a handle on things 👍

Sooooo, here’s the inevitable alternate AMD spec to have a look at. It’s a touch over budget but I reckon it’s worth it. Brand new design twelve core CPU, superior on both single and multi threading, thermal performance and far less security flaws than an Intel processor.

Kept the RAM high as per your remit on the work side of things. Tweaked the storage so you’ve got an ultra fast M.2 boot drive, and another one for your games and day to day stuff. I wouldn’t bother with an Ironwolf HDD but storage requirements are personal to the user so I’ve left that in there, I’m sure you chose it for a reason 👍

Put the H115i RGB cooler in there. These liquid coolers are maintenance free aside from a little dust removal once or twice a year. And they’re awesome, I’ve got the little brother of that one in mine and it’s been running pretty much constantly since purchase. They’re superior to fan cooling in every way now, gone are the days of horror stories about leaks ruining systems. In my opinion they’re getting to be a necessity on chips eight cores and upwards as they’re much more efficient than a fan and will keep a processor at optimum temperatures far better.

Now... the GPU. I’m currently using a 3070 with an ultrawide 1440p 144Hz monitor and it’s not even flinching when I chuck a system killer like Red Dead Redemption 2 at it. So I reckon it’s perfect for the screen you’ve picked out... unless you’re one of those nutters who demands that EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE SETTING is set to ultra. If you are, then my plan unravels 😆

Where you say Fast SSD, compare the SSD you spec’d and a Samsung 980 Pro or 2 Tb firecuda M.2’s.

Thanks gavras. Yeah sata ssd and m2 are poles apart. M2 almost double sata. Ill look into it buddy. Thanks
Yes definitely, unfortunately only one make of CPU currently does PCIe 4.0 at the moment.

it’s also the only one that is not getting replaced by a stop gap cpu early next year..

guess what the make is.

a clue.

it starts with A

So intel got another chip out soon?
i keep hearing about amd and there resurgence. I need to read up on the ryzen.
whats wrong with intel chips ? Apart from security, thermals, always thought they had floating point edge and slightly better performance.

are amd really beating intel up these days like im reading about in the cpu product area?

Looks like i got a bit of reading to do. I will investigate and keep you in loop
thanks so much for the info and steer on other options

much appreciated

Yeah, Intel only really had the edge on single threading since the last generation of AMD CPUs, they’d been overtaken in every other area. But the 5000 series have now blown that away too.

would really like summat before christmas.

Likely or wishful thinking ?
dont think me rude, i appreciate the info. But i got to hit the hay. I have work at 830am and im old, need my sleep. I will do some reading up and check back tomorrow.

Yep as @AgentCooper says the latest Zen 3 - 5000 CPU give Intel a good kicking.

the current CPU by Intel is due replaced early next year by Rocket Lake which is believed to be an interim gap until they sort out next architecture and drop in n.

Its a bit like AMD are taking the battle to Nvidia as well.

my last few systems have been intel and Nvidia cards for last 10 years, so not exactly an AMD fan boy lol.

If you look in to the Intel road map especially End Of Life side of things and board compatibility, it gets potentially Darwin to chose Intel.

Ryzen 7 zen 3 ? Im confused.
darwin. Does that mean madness.
drop in n ?
please explain or are these typos

Hi all.

back with my spec. Want to stay with intel for now, so please vet it for suitibility, rather than comparison to amd, which i know are probably better at present. But having more options isnt helping the decision process. I need to know if this is a good spec based on intels current flagship.

should i have any concerns with cooling given chosen solutions in this spec?

will be used for work. hosting 8 or more vm’s on hyperv. Hence the fast disk ssd and high memory.

will also be used for gaming, want best frame rates with settings at max where possible. Hence 3080.

all help and feedback appreciated.
regards,wob

spec below ... lol
