Transfer of files from desktop to laptop

Hello All
Is there a simple way to transfer files and e mail addresses from a desktop to a laptop? If there isn't a simple way what is the procedure.

IMO the safest way is to back them up onto an external drive from the PC and then copy from the external drive to the laptop.

What do you mean email addresses?

Email contacts that live in your (e.g.) Gmail account live in your account and would be accessible to any PC you signed into your account from. Do you mean contacts in an email 'client' like MS Outlook, or Thunderbird?
