I have an optimus V with ubuntu 14.04. Initially I had it hooked up to monitor with a USB keyboard and mouse and all was fine. But I had reason to use the trackpad and ubuntu keeps freezing with it. so frustrating. Anyone encountered the same problem or have any ideas how to fix it?

I tried the trackpad on my Optimus V 17.3 running Ubuntu 14.04 - it works fine. So I would suggest that it is
not a driver problem with Ubuntu. As to how to fix it, perhaps try booting without a mouse plugged in and ensuring
that the trackpad is enabled using fn & f1, let Ubuntu work only with the trackpad at first, see if the problem persists.

Have you tried
rmmod psmouse; modprobe psmouse
(As root, or using sudo, of course). That is to reload the mouse driver.

Mind you if the system has frozen, maybe you can't get in to do that.
If you have another machine, perhaps you can ssh in and give the command that way.
If it works, then you need to bug report it (presumably via Ubuntu).

By the way, it would be a good idea to tell us what type of touch pad
you have. One way would be
hwinfo| grep -i touchpad
On my Ultranote, that tells me
Model: "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
