Unable to boot into safe mode.

I would like to be able to boot into Safe Mode from the initial boot up. On previous PC's ythe most common way was to hit the F8 key prior to the first Windows screen to appear. On my new machine this just gets me to the boot sequence. I have tried all the other F keys together with the Del key all to no avail. I can get to Safe Mode from within Windows 7 via the Boot tag in the MSConfig window but that is only of use if I can first boot up to Windows. I have an Asus motherboard. Any advice please?

Once you get to the boot menu using the F8 key, just highlight your primary harddrive then press enter to select the item then tap the F8 key repeatedly straight afterwards.

This should give you the advanced boot options including safe mode.
