USB ports failing.

My PCS computer is only a couple of months old, however the USB ports have been failing intermittently recently and now have totally lost power or something.

It started about a month ago, occasionally my headset would stop working and the sound would be diverted to my monitor. Occasionally my mouse would turn off. Sometimes videos on youtube would stop playing sound and then stop playing entirely, only a full restart of the PC would fix it.

Today however, my headset stopped working and the sound once again got divert to my monitor. I was then unable to play back videos at all. Upon rebooting the PC my mouse was not working and neither was my headset. For whatever reason, my keyboard still works and thankfully has a USB port on it so I am able to plug my mouse into the keyboard for now.

So it seems to me like there is some kind of power issue to the USB ports. I did initially try an old mouse in one. It lit up very faintly for a moment before fading out and not working as well.

Is this possibly due to a faulty connector or a connector not fully seated perhaps? If so will it be fixable by someone whos not entirely computer literate, yet not a complete idiot. If so, anyone know how I could fix it, and where to look for the connector?

I'd really not want to have to go through the hassle of sending it back for something as simple as re-seating a connector.

Here is the build, if its of any help.

Both are doing the same thing. I tried my mouse and headset in the front case USBs and the back motherboard ones, same deal with both sets. For whatever reason only my keyboard is immune.

Also, it might not be power problem. I tested my phone charger in them, and my phone is getting charged up by them... soo perhaps software/driver clash somewhere?

If you click on your usb devices in the running programs, are any of them erroring?

I dont have the usb symbol in that hidden icon bit. I also turned it to on in the "show which icons appear" bit, still nothing.

Sorry, seen you got there....

So it's looks like your 3.1 ports definitely have an issue.

If you right click on the 3.1 entry and delete it, then reboot, that should reinstall the driver and hopefully fix the issue

It's possible you'll have to manually install the driver, I'll just check out the drivers page now.

Its fixed! :D

Thanks a bunch dude, cant express the levity that washed over me when my headset sprang into life. Wonder what caused it to have a hissy fit in the first place.

Once again thank you so much, I'd push the "give cookie" button if there was one.

It's quite common with USB ports, the driver will just flake out. It's possible that the latest one hadn't properly installed, and uninstalling it and letting windows update find the latest on reboot will usually sort it out.

9 times out of 10, issues are totally fixeable with a software / driver tweak, it's only in extreme cases that it's actually hardware related and requires an RMA fix.
