Video Editing Laptop

Hi there!

I was looking for some advice on a video editing laptop, which I'll be using to run Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Davinci Resolve. It won't be used for any gaming. I'm aiming to spend about £2500, but willing to spend a bit more if given a good reason to.

I was wondering if someone could clarify the benefits of the Enmotus Fuzedrive? My understanding is that it uses AI to run programs faster, so I was planning on using it as my primary drive, where I'll have the OS and programs installed. I will be using my second M.2 drive to store video files and scratch files for editing, but not any programs. Do I gain any advantage setting my second drive as a Fuzedrive as well, or would a Samsung Evo Plus be better? (Although PC Specialist seem to have recently removed the Fuzedrive as a second M.2 option, so perhaps the decision has already been made anyway...)

Aside from that, would love any thoughts or input on the below spec. Is it worth waiting for the RTX 3080 to come back into stock, in relation to video editing and colour grading?

Many thanks in advance!
Andy

Ok I've tweaked it slightly, I've changed the RAM to 2933MHz and reduced it to 32GB which should be fine, I edit 4K video on my laptop and that's only got 16GB in it and i've never got close to using it all, I've also removed the Fuzedrive and replaced it with the faster 970 M.2 which you now have 2 of 1 at 1TB for your System drive and the other 2TB that you originally specced

Thanks Martin, that's really helpful!

Would you say that 32GB at 2933MHz trumps 64GB at 2666MHz overall then? And do you have any examples of where the Fuzedrive would be preferable to the 970 M.2? Just trying to understand what it's capabilities are.

Many thanks!
Andy

I had similar questions when I specced my machine a few months ago. If you look on youtube there are some comparison videos where you can see some good examples of the pros/cons of each. Apologies but I dont have an exact link right now.

I would definitely stick with the 970 for sustained writes. Everything else is marginal.

32GB @ 2933 is going to be faster than 2666, there's no doubt. The query is whether you will have a use for 64GB (by which the speed is limited). This is something only you can answer, but I would do so based on your workloads and checking, rather than guessing. That quantity of RAM is very expensive and limits the rest of the build, as well as throughput performance. If you absolutely need 64GB then it's a no-brainer, but if it's a "just in case" purchase, I would definitely re-think it.

A RAM limit doesn't limit what you can do, simply the rate at which you can do it. Having the 970 pro as a secondary and used as a cache will mitigate this somewhat. It'll be far better than a more conventional drive but still nowhere near as fast as RAM.

Another option is to buy the lowest amount of RAM with the laptop , and separately order 2x 32 GB 3200 Mhz DIMMs .
It is a well known fact that Ryzen CPU`s thrives with fast memory and reap benefits with it. However be aware of the voltages and latencies of the memory before buying and check if the memory will be supported for your CPU.

Doing a bit of research, it does seem that both Adobe Premiere Pro, and After Effects like to chew through RAM. I'm planning on doing a lot of 4K editing, and 64GB of RAM seems to be recommended, although the speed isn't specified, as seen below.

How much RAM does Premiere Pro need?

The exact amount you need will depend on exactly what you are doing, but we do have a general guideline depending on the different resolutions you work with:

Footage Resolution1080p4K6K/8K+
Minimum RAM capacity32GB64GB128GB

This is an interesting idea. My knowledge is pretty sparse, so would you be able to point to an example that would be supported by the Ryzen 5900HX included in the Recoil 15.6"?

Many thanks for all the help so far guys! Andy

The difficulty you will have with purchasing your own is the lack of support and compatibility knowledge. There is no way of knowing if it will flat out work with the system without trying it.

A better idea would be to call PCS and ask if they can offer it as an option to you. It may require them doing some testing but it may be in their best interest for such systems.

With alllllll of that being said. I understand the information from Adobe but I would advise caution. You're going to be working on a laptop, not a powerhouse desktop. The amount of RAM utilised will directly relate to the amount of general power and throughput of your system. I'm not convinced that you would have any real difference in your productivity with 32GB and a FAST cache drive.

None of these software's grind to a halt or stop working because RAM is getting low. It's simply cached. If you tell the system to cache to a secondary (again FAST) drive, you will mitigate it as much as possible. This isn't a replacement for RAM but it's a good secondary option when the needs are unknown.

Anyway, I would reiterate you need to understand your own uses and needs a little more. I wouldn't go with the generalised yard stick.

Thanks for all this Scott, it's given me a lot of food for thought! I've been doing a bit of research over the past couple days, and everything I'm reading is pointing towards more RAM in regards to video editing specifically, although never mentions the speed! I was wondering if you could elaborate a little more about what you were saying in how higher RAM may limit the rest of the build, and affects throughput performance?

I'm not too bothered about the price difference between 64GB and 32GB, if it means I can get an extra year or two out of the laptop towards the end of it's life, as I'm sure RAM requirements will expand with each new version of Premiere Pro that'll be released in the coming years. My current PCS laptop has lasted me almost eight years, so would be lovely if this new one could last as long! :)

The limitation to you isn't a bottleneck, it's a budget difference. If you have the budget for the 64GB of RAM without compromising in the other areas then I would definitely go for it. Better to have too much than too little.

The trade off with the higher capacity is the slower speed. That shouldn't have too much of an impact though.

However, with that being said, we are looking at a laptop here and not a desktop. It neither has the desktop power or even a desktop processor in place. Purely in this set of circumstances I would be amazed if you would notice the difference between 32GB and 64GB for daily use, as the system just doesn't have the processing grunt for the capacity of the RAM to cause an impact. This is purely my rational thinking though, rather than having data to back it up.

People tend to blanket their recommendations based on what they have/use. It's difficult to get solid information on a laptop system and its ram utilisation with heavy CPU processing tasks...... as people don't tend to benchmark such limiting factors.

I have seen laptops though with Intel Xeon CPU`s and Quadro GPU`s solely meant for workstation use , obviously not PCS machines , but still they do exist . So one should not be so quick to write off laptops as workstations . But generally speaking higher clock frequency DIMMs mated with the matching CPU will give a higher memory bandwidth that will be beneficial with memory intensive applications. If you have the budget for faster memory , I would say get it as it has no drawbacks to them .

Not sure what you mean by writing them off? I don't think I suggested that they couldn't be workstations, I merely stated that with the CPU in the above system it's not a workstation or desktop class level of performance. I have a DTR laptop myself so I do understand their capabilities when used in such a fashion. My point with that particular comment was in regards to browsing the net for answers on 32 vs 64... in most comparisons they won't be measuring the differences using a laptop, they will be measuring the capabilities using a high end desktop/workstation. The comparison needs to be considered on a whole, rather than solely the memory performance highlights.

My main point being that I think the overall throughput, and potentially the bandwidth, will be limited by the nature of the CPU, rather than the frequency of the RAM. I'm not convinced that in an operational sense the RAM would be drained quickly and significantly enough to warrant 64GB. The system may use it, but it's effectiveness vs a good quality cache drive paired with 32GB would be similar.

If you stuck all the fastest stuff into a pc/laptop it dose not mean you will have the fastest machine (just bottle necks). It's all about the matching of the right parts so they complement each other. eg you would not match a RTX 3090 with a quad core! or put 3600mhz ram with a intel 10400.

I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on this now!

I noticed today that PCS have made the RTX 3080 available for the Recoil 15.6" again, as long as it's paired with the Intel 11800H. So I've made a couple of tweaks to the build, as seen below. Does anyone have any final thoughts on this before I move forward with it? I've noticed that you can build the Ionico to the exact same spec, although it is £100 more expensive. Does the Ionico have any notable advantages? I chose to stick with the Recoil, assuming that the thermals are better due to it being a bigger machine.

We love you Ukraine
if it’s for video editing then the balance of an AMD processor with a 3070 would be more valuable than an Intel cpu and a 3080 I would suggest.

Remember, the GPU is mainly processing effects only, it’s the CPU doing most of the full rendering. AMD CPUs are very literally double the performance in some multithreaded workloads.

My tuppence worth.
You had better get a cooling pad for that intel as they run hot and thermal throttle with big work loads. Me I would go AMD for better power usage and better multitasking but that's me

So in an ideal world, you would perhaps suggest the 5900HX paired with the RTX3080? It's a shame that PCS aren't offering that as an option at the moment.. Based on what you're saying, I'm now leaning towards the 5900HX combined with the 3070. The only concern that I have is that with each iteration of Premiere Pro, it seems that the GPU is usually the first component to become outdated. (I currently can't run the latest version of Premiere on my machine due to the old GPU, meaning I've actually had to lose out on jobs from potential clients). I'm obviously wanting it to have as long a life as possible before needing to upgrade again. In your estimation, what would you say the difference was between the 3070 and 3080 in extending the lifespan of the machine?

Also, am I correct in my understanding that the USB-C port can be used as a Thunderbolt port in an Intel machine, but not an AMD machine?

Cheers for the help!
