Volcanic Eruption in Tonga seen from space

This is quite frightening at the sheer scale of it.

A few hours ago, there was a massive underwater volcanic eruption off the Island of Tonga north east of Australia and New Zealand.

It was so destructive that they caught it from space.

They've issued Tsunami warnings in Australia and New Zealand, US east coast and Japan.

I've got some friends who are currently sailing around New Zealand on a 50 foot yaucht, I'm sure they're fine and will have had some warning from the coast-guard probably to make way to port until it's passed.

You are actually better off in deep water with a tsunami, as the wave amplitude is relatively low. The wavelength is very long and speed very high. Once they hit shallower water, the waves slow, wavelength decreases and wave height increases. This is where the damage occurs.

Obviously, you wouldn’t want to be too close to the underwater volcano eruption that caused the tsunami.
