Vortex 3 Hardware Problems

Okay so long story short my my Vortex 3 has exploded. Turn it on one morning and the left fan doesn't run, runs up incredible heat and dies. Reboot and it beeps at me and shuts down after a minute or so. I've been told this a thermal paste issue but I can't tell if the smell off it is thermal paste or a blown fan circuit. I plan to ship it back since I have 3 years labour warranty on it. Anyone else had this issue or know what it is?

Well if the fan isn't running then that is probably your problem. The fan might just have died and that means after a few minutes the laptop overheats, tells you its over heating by beeping at you then shutting down to save from any melted CPU's or such like.

It might not be a big cost (if you only have the labour part of the warranty left you will need to pay parts and shipping) it may just be the fan that needs replacing. If its something more serious (it could be if you smell burning) you may be looking at forking out for a more expensive piece of hardware like the motherboard.

if you only have the labour part of the warranty remaining it might be worth looking at a local repair shop, the cost of the postage might mean it would be cheaper getting a local shop to do it rather than PCS.

Might be worth it if you have a small screwdriver taking the bottom off and seeing if the wire that connects the cooling fan to the motherboard is still attached. You could also try removing it, then replacing it to see if that works.

I ran a quick check and the fan will run after spinning it but I can't check by running it on it's own. A poorly fitted keyboard has rendered the FN key useless. I have been able to turn the computer on and it will go but anything more demanding than internet browsing/ low power programs will kill it dead after a minute. Should have put this in my original post and thanks for the help.

So if you give it a little push it will start spinning? Otherwise it wont, and even when it is spinning it cant spin fast enough to cool the processor for anything more demanding than a webpage?

If that's the case then the fan bearing is probably goosed, needs a replacement fan.

I'm with mantadog (again :)). It does sound like a fan, that's probably what you can smell. It might (if you're very lucky) just be dust build up so give it a good clean internally first. If you can verify that it is just the fan you could save money by getting PCS to send you one and you fit it yourself?

So I cleaned out some dust from the fan, nothing major cleanest it'll get. Another thing I've noted is it won't charge. The burning smell is definitely in the CPU/Fan area. The problem is I can't charge the damn thing to run the fans up so that has effectively blocked my progress. I will hopefully be able to work on that over the weekend. Fan bearing seems the likely issue which I can only pray to god it is.
