Which Optimus? Noise, heat, and battery life issues.

Hi,

This is my first post here -- and certainly not the last. After having checked all the actors in the U.K. custom laptop market I am convinced that PC Specialist is the best from every perspective: price, components, service...

I have settled for an Optimus laptop but I have not decided which one yet. I am hesitating between the three models that are available: X13, X15, and X17.

The 13.3-inch version was my first choice for many reasons, including the non-glossy screen frame, the size, and the lower price. However, after having read some reviews of the Clevo W230ST chassis, I was not so sure. The main issues that have been reported with the X13 are the following:
- Battery life on the X13 is lower than that of the X15 and X17;
- The X13's fan is much noisier than the other models and it may produce a lot of noise with no apparent reason when idle -- which may be annoying if I intend to use it in the classroom or during work meetings;
- The front part of the chassis, where I am supposed to lay my hands, overheats easily.

I am aware that I should not expect to be impressed by battery life, quietness, and external temperature provided by either model. That being said, I would like to make an optimal purchase by picking the least annoying model with respect to the abovementioned criteria.

So my main question is: Do those of you who have tried both the X13 and the X15/X17 have noticed a significant difference in terms of noise + heat + battery life? If so, which model would you recommend?

And as regards noise, have you experienced annoying levels with either Optimus model when performing simple tasks such as video streaming, word processing, web browsing?

I am also considering a Vortex IV if it appears to perform better in terms of noise/heat/battery life, but that does not seem to be the case.

P.S.: Other question:

The X13 being seemingly less quiet, and the X17 being a bit too large, the X15 sounds like a great compromise since its 15.6-inch screen makes it more portable and since it has the same 76.96WH battery as the X17. The problem is that it is -- surprisingly! -- much more expensive than the two other Optimus models with the specs I want (8GB, i7 4710MQ, GTX 860M). But I have found an alternative: a third-party vendor offers the X15 with the specs I need -- actually, even better -- for a couple hundred quid less than PC Specialist, and it can be delivered in 24h, which would be great.

But I was wondering whether:
- I would be able to register my Optimus X15 on PC Specialist's website to be able to buy upgrades in the future (it comes with the 3 year Guarantee, but obviously I won't have an order number from PC Specialist and the order will not be linked with my PC Specialist account, will it?);
- (Bonus question) I will have my free copy of Watch Dogs?!!
- Overall, is the X15 a good chassis? Not many reviews down here...

I have the first Optimus V 17" we sold running on still the original BIOS and it runs quite good, only kicks up the fan now and again or when its being stressed. I can generally watch two films before the battery needs charging but I haven't been very kind to my battery :).

- When you create an order with us the warranty is tied to the online account so you don't need to register anything :).
- If we still have stock when you order then yes
- Main difference in 15 and 17 is the 15" has a backlight keyboard.

Thank you moosEh for your swift reply!

Sounds like the 17" is the safest option. But since size matters, I'd also welcome opinions of people who have compared the 13" and 15/17" versions hands-on. If the difference in terms of heat + noise is not that significant I'd rather go for the 13".

In the second part of your answer you're referring to direct purchases from PCS website, aren't you?

By the way, as I don't have access to the "upgrades" area of the website, I was wondering whether it was possible to order a new keyboard layout (another language) in the future.
