Will my current PC setup work with the new RTX 3080?

I got my PC built from PCSpecialist a long time ago, so some of my components such as the motherboard and the power supply are old. Below I have left my current desktop specs, will I be able to just swap my GTX 1060 with the RTX 3080 with no problems? Or do I need to change the motherboard or the power supply to be compatible with the RTX 3080?

You would need a new power supply, in fact i would suggest a complete new system based around an AMD processor

I'd be looking at the the RMx 850W, as far as would the Mobo handle things, i couldn't say, maybe someone such as @SpyderTracks , @AgentCooper or @Scott could help there
Thank you for tagging some people that will help further! I know very little about power supplies, but I know there are modular and non modular power supplies, I don't know which one is mine, I think the one I have is not modular, so is the one you suggested not modular? I would rather stick to what I have so I dont have to re-cable and re-arrange everything.

The one you have is non modular, which means all the cables come straight out of it, which means you have no choice but to recable whatever you do, the one that i said is modular so you only have to plug in the cables you need & is easy to add more in the future should you need them, also its fans only run under above about 80% of its capacity

Ok yes that makes sense. I will definetly change to a modular power supply in that case. If I understand it correctly, choosing a power supply isn't a big deal as long as you choose the correct power, so it just comes down to which brand and price? Or is there somethings I need to look out for?

I would go with the Corsair RMx 850 that i mentioned earlier
Ok cool, so now it just comes down to actually me getting my hands on an RTX 3080... I know my motherboard is PCI3 but the GPU is PCI4, however, after looking online, it does not impact performance significantly. So I just need to get a new power supply. Am I correct to coming to that conclusion?

Pretty much, yes.

The only other factor is the length of the GPU and if it will fit in the case, give me a second and I’ll look it up.

If I remember correctly, when I chose the case, it said that you can take off some of the hard drive bays to fit an extra long GPU, which I am assuming they are referring to an instance like this. However if you are double checking it, that would be greatly appreciated!

I just saw that you are using the RAT 7 mouse, I have been using it for at least 5 years and in my opinion, the best made mouse in the world... I have tried so many, but none like it.

Yeah, best to be sure, so you're right, you can take out the drive expansion bay to fit a longer length GPU.

These are the specific measurements it can accomodate:

270mm with drive cage / 408mm without

So just be sure that the GPU will fit. An average 3080 is around 280mm so you would need to remove the drive bay.

Before we go any further though, what are you using the PC for and what monitor are you pairing it with, what make and model?

Great! Thank you very much for double checking it.

I am a researcher in data science (artifical intelligence, deep learning), and I also game now and again. I have the Samsung LC49RG90SSUXEN 49" Curved LED Gaming Monitor. The reason why I want to upgrade the GPU is not so much because of the research aspect, although it will help there as well, but it's mainly because right now I am not able to play on full screen with the GTX 1060 on my monitor (resolution is 5120x1440). I get very low FPS like 5-10 in most games in normal quality. Playing in full screen in such ultra wide monitor is such a great experience for me, and after looking around, the RTX 3080 will get the job done.

Oh, yeah, in that case, for both uses the 3080 would be a good fit all round.

Lovely monitor, I'm aiming for the G9 which is just a newer version of that one, incredible monitors! Nothing beats that resolution for both gaming and productivity.

Yeah, get a decent RMx PSU, 850W at the very minimum, and then you're good to go.

Nice, good to hear that I am making a reasonable purchase from you, that makes me feel a bit better about it...

I will never go back to single monitors again... My next expansion, if required, is a two stack of the same monitor, and after that a 3 stack :)

Thank you for your help. You have been great, all my doubts have been dealt with. Thanks guys @Martinr36.

@SpyderTracks @Martinr36 Sorry to bother you guys again, but since the RTX 3080 Ti is coming out, will it be worth it for me to get the Ti over the normal 3080 in my case? Budget is not an issue, but will it be worth it for the display I have to get the Ti instead? Again, thank you for your time.

The 3080Ti is going to be the pinnacle of gaming GPU's this generation so I'd say yes, the problem is going to be availability. Go for it dude wish you all the luck but be prepared for scarcity
