Wireless Network not as fast as it should be

Hi, I recently bought a desktop PC from PCSpecialist and just set it up today in fact. Performance wise, it's working fine and I have no complaints there. The problem is that although I am getting a connection to the wireless network fine, it's not nearly as fast as it should be. I'm with Virgin Media and the Superhub is downstairs. I'm sitting upstairs in my study and Speedtest is showing 15Mbps download speed on the new desktop and 50Mbps download speed on the laptop sitting on my knee - which is roughly the download speed I'm paying for (it's supposed to be 60Mbps but, you know, ISPs). The distance doesn't seem to be a problem. I'm wondering if it's the wireless card I got? Maybe I haven't set it up correctly? I got the PC Specialist 150Mbps Wireless N card.

Windows is telling me that the speed of the network is 72.0 Mbps on the desktop, while on the laptop Windows is telling me it's 144.0 Mbps. Presumably this is something to do with it. On the desktop, Device Manager is showing 2 things under Network Adapters: '802.11n Wireless LAN card' and 'Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (2) I218-V.

Did I buy the wrong kind of Wireless card? Is it likely that I have configured incorrectly, somehow? Does the computer need to be put somewhere other than under a desk to get decent speeds? The last one seems unlikely considering the laptop a foot away from it is getting more than 3 times the speed.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Which wireless card did you buy? Post your original specs.

Pre installed Windows 8.1. I didn't do any driver installation myself. Upon fiddling around with the location of the desktop, moving it into literally the middle of the room does increase the speed noticeably, but still not even close to the speed the laptop is getting. I'm thinking at minimum I should get some sort of external antenna, but I'm still very confused as to why this would be happening.

Usually there would be an antenna you need to attach to the back of the card?
