Hi guys new member here,

Would you be so kind and have a look at the specs of the laptop I am looking to buy to run Linux Mint 18.2 mate edition on, I been running linux for a lot of years but my laptop is old and I'm looking for a modern replacement, my main concern is the SSD and Ram, is over the top or could I save a few quid.

Yours views and opinions would be appreciated,

Thanks

That is a great SSD, I have one in my Optimus. RAM is fine although depending on what you will be using it for you may need more, that is a simple upgrade though. Mint should be fine on it, I have run a variety of Linux distros on my three PCS machines.

Hi Stephen, Thank you for taking the time to reply, I was a bit concerned about the SSD as this will be the first laptop I have purchased with one fitted, I will only be using the laptop for surfing the web and email, I won't be using it for games.

I do build web site and maintain them, but since I retired last year, I have only three left that I look after now.

Regards

John

The SSD isn't much of an asset for games anyway. :) It does however make Windows, programs, and anything you put on it load a lot faster and so make the experience of using the laptop a lot more responsive.

It looks like a good build for what you want it for.

Thank you Oussebon, I'm hoping the laptop will last a few years, I placed the order a few minutes ago.

Hope you like it, if you get time a review would be nice. I am getting a new laptop for my aunt soon and she will be migrating to Linux as is no fan of W10 and the Ultranote is one she likes the look of.

Re the SSD, when you have not had one you can live without it but once you have one you will not want to go back, the boot up times are amazing, I now make my cup of tea before logging on whereas I used to do it while the machine was powering up :)

I've got SSD on three different PCSpecialist laptops since 2012 (running Fedora & KDE). It makes Linux boot up in about 5 seconds and also uses a lot less power, thus extending battery range.

* 8Gb of RAM is fine for most things

* I tend to go for 16Gb so i can run VMs if needbe
