After about 8-9 years my venerable i5 2500k cpu / motherboard died.

its now time for a bit of a stop gap replacement.

i say stop gap, as moving house in next 6 months and at some point after the move will get a new GFX card and monitor (4K such as acre nitro, predator etc).

for now however I want a relatively cheap setup with one eye on future. Ā£1200 to Ā£1400

it will be AMD mainly due to intel being in a state of flux etc.

it will be using a decent 24ā€ 1080p monitor with 144hz (predator if I remember correctly)

i have a 2TB Firecuda hybrid I will reuse but will go for an M.2 as new upgrade.

current gfx is a 1060 gtx with 6gb memory.

i appreciate intermediate build will be bit unbalanced.

main question is on the AMD CPU options.

i quite like the idea of the 65w Ryzen 9 3900 non x

however, is anyone running one and can comment.

then itā€™s Ryzen 9 3900x versus the Ryzen 7 3800XT

is there much between them?

i had another play after reading your post and some others on here (Edited out the bits that are the same).


my next bit is what case, my current case is a NZXT Phantom full tower, so looking for a mid tower as replacement.

decent cooling, not loud, nice if ability to control fans (on off and variable) as its handy when just using O365 for typing stuff lol.

options are (unless there are some other amazing ones.

Eventually decided to put my order in, only to find out the Corsair H100i Platinum is out of stock ... typical lol.

the 115i Platinum is in stock, however that means moving to a new case.

i am thinking on the the Fractal Meshify S2 with blackout glass.

what are people thoughts on the following case and change on case fans to LL120ā€™s x 3.

that should put the 115 fans on the top and replace 2 front and 1 rear fans with the Corsair LL1120ā€™s.

Would however it be a waste putting RGB fans in a dark glass case.

Anyone any photos, vids of Meshify with blackout glass and RGB?

yes agreed, also appears better quality with the newer CPUs, will bear it in mind.

the key bit is though upgrading fans and matching with the Meshify S2 case.

it was also cooling / air flow as well.

i believe the LL120 are decent from reviews and should be better than the Meshify Stock.

Coming from a I5 2500K, the majority of CPUā€™s will provide that performance boost.

LL120s are good, I wouldn't be overly concerned though. If it's lighting you are after then that's a fair shout but the stock fans with the Meshify case are decent.

With the H115i on there you won't have to worry too much about cooling. The airflow of the case is excellent and will be aided by the H115i as well.

just had another look at cases, it makes more ā€™Senseā€™... going for the Corsair 500D SE, that includes the LL120 fans AND controller.

as mentioned originally, this is sort of a stop gap until moved house etc, until then itā€™s 1080p with a GFX 1060 6 GB card.

it will put up with the obvious imbalance for a bit, not really a problem.

i now believe I had nailed my build lol.

Yeah.... now THAT sort of thinking I can get behind haha.

I would recommend dropping the black case fan and purchasing one of the ML120 Pros from Corsair (can be had from Scan or Amazon etc).

Just fit it yourself and plug it into the controller. A black exhaust fan in that case with all those pretty fans would be a complete waste.

good shout,about the ML.

the black fan is just a space holder until I am happy system has bedded down.

will order one from Amazon.


its a bit of a shame you canā€™t tinker with the config and have them fitted as part of build.

just need to put order in tomorrow.

order placed, as per above 500d SE, 7800XT, 570 Strix etc, however went for the RMx 750 PSU modular.

will keep the Ā£6 rear fan on the order, just means I know that fan channel works and will order an ML from Amazon once happy with PC.

Then itā€™s a case of waiting for house move, having new office built and seeing what 4K screens and GPU combos are in Black Friday sales.

(shhh nearly mentioned the C word lol).
