New laptop for programming

Hi,

My current laptop a Dell XPS 9510 was running my programming software and simulator without issue (TIA Portal v18 and Factory io) until recently.
Now when i visulise my code in the virtual enviroment Factory io the programming software stutters enough to make it unusable.
I upgraded the RAM from 16gb to 64gb with no change. I've taken it to a computer repair shop for troubleshooting and they said everything is running perfectly!

So i'm looking to buy a laptop to run these 2 programs and i'm super paranoid about buying something it doesn't run well on or over configurating a laptop and spending a fortune unnecessarily

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I'm using 2 external monitors 1x Samsung LC34J791WTU and standard Samsung 24" 1080p.
Looking for a 15" or 16" laptop.

From the Factory io website minimum specs, my XPS fans would constantly run and the laptop would get quite hot.

Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Thanks

We're not driven by sales at all, none of us work for PCS, we're just enthusiasts and techies who like to get the best deal for people.

Being completely honest, you have absolutely no need for a new laptop, the one you have is high spec and a decent model.

On any PC or laptop, you're going to run into issues, weather they're software or hardware. You don't just replace it unnecessarily if issues arise, you need to troubleshoot the issue and correct it

There's likely simply a software isssue with an update or something.

With it getting hot, I take it you've serviced it since you've had it, if it's overheating under stress, it's likely because the thermal paste has degraded (which is completely expected on a laptop) and needs replacing to bring temps back in line. Normally a repaste is required annually to avoid thermal issues, that's on any laptop.

I'm not saying this to put you off PCS, or be difficult, honestly, it's just a huge waste of money that is likely not going to do any good anyway if it's a software issue related to a windows update or something as exactly the same thing will happen on any laptop or computer if it's an update that's caused it.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice.

I have tried upgrading to windows 11. This didn’t resolve the issue.
I’m back on a fresh install of 10.

I haven’t replaced the thermal paste. When I took to the computer repair store they offered this but said they don’t think it’ll solve my issue.
Is there a way to measure temperature or performance so I know if the paste requires replacing?

Are there any other steps or measures you’d try to resolve and fix the issue?

Thanks

It's not something we can help with on this forum as it's purely for support on PCSpecialist systems.

But there's absolutely no point just buying a new laptop, you need to troubleshoot the issue and correct it. Just don't want you wasting thousands of pounds needlessly.
