17.3" Vortex III Laptop Review

My shiny new Vortex III arrived on Monday morning, and I have been unbearably smug ever since (or so I'm told :p). I was hoping to do an unboxing vid, but unfortunately my old lappy died before the new one arrived, taking with it the webcam I would have used to shoot the video. Having seen Craigsup's great review, I figured it was high time I at least posted one of my own, albeit pictureless until I get back home to my proper camera.

As a games developer who travels a lot, I was after both high performance and reliability in a neat future-proof package. After much hunting online and comparing prices, PC Specialist was the only way to go. The spec that I eventually settled on was as follows:

Chassis & Display: Vortex Series:17.3" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080) (£79)

Having read through the forums before placing my order, I was already aware that the 3610QM processor was out of stock, so I was prepared for a long wait. Little did I realise that my old laptop was a lot closer to dying than I'd previously thought - only days after placing my order, it refused to boot up and I was well and truly up the creek... on site with my right arm (as it were) not functioning. I emailed PCS to ask for an updated ETA on the build once the CPU shipment arrived. They assured me that I would most likely get my new laptop by the end of the following week. All credit to PCS for doing their best to speed things up for me. You saved my arse, lol.

On to the laptop...

The first thing I noticed was the weight of the beast. My friend who I am staying with atm laughed when he saw the size of the box and said "They do know it's a laptop you wanted, right?" [rollinglaugh]

It is not a lightweight laptop by any stretch of the imagination, so if you are looking for ultra-portable, the Vortex III won't be for you. However, if it is performance you are after, then the Vortex III will be just the thing.

The matte screen is a thing of beauty and I am glad I paid the extra for it instead of a glossy screen. It is crisp, sharp and vibrant. Certainly the best laptop screen I've worked with to date. I cannot abide the overly glossy Alienware setup, where the glare usually ends up setting off a migraine or six when I'm working in bright light. My new Vortex III, however, performed admirably outdoors when I was taking advantage of the sunshine earlier in the week.

That brings me on to the Ultimate-N 6300 wireless adaptor. I deliberately moved as far away from the router as possible, until I ran out of garden. Although it lost a few 'bars' of signal strength, the connection remained as reliable as ever, and I was able to download large updates without any problems. Battery life was not too bad - I got around 2 and 3 quarter hours out of it before it reached 10% and gave me the low battery warning. I have not yet tested the battery life under heavier load, but I will update you once I have.

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the multitouch mousepad. Whilst there are some features that I love, half of the time it misinterprets normal cursor movements as gestures, which can be a bit of a pain in the arse. You can disable certain gestures and customise them to a certain degree, so I will no doubt be playing with those settings over the weekend. The keyboard layout takes some getting used to, since some keys are not where I would expect them to be. After 5 days of using this keyboard, I am quickly getting used to the slightly different layout. The keys are well-spaced and responsive. The backlighting makes for some nice eye candy, as well as being useful in low light. I doubt very much that I would use any of the flashing options as they are a bit too distracting.

Blu ray playback is fantastic. The drive does get a bit noisy when you first put a disk in, but after that, it operates quietly and you can enjoy watching movies without any odd noises ruining your cinematic experience. The full HD screen really comes into its own here as well.

The Intel SSD drive is probably the best investment I made on this spec. Boot time is around 15s, including all the various resource-hogging services that I have running in the background. Combined with the maxed out 32Gb memory, it is pretty Adobe/Autodesk proof at the moment, and I have happily been coding in one window, with a 3D render busy working away in another. Multitasking is a synch, which is just as well, considering all the catching up on work I've had to do this week.

For all of this beefy performance, the Vortex III is surprisingly cool running - I have actually been able to use it on my lap whilst putting it through its paces. I have a cooler, but I have yet to use it on this machine.

All in all, I love this laptop a little bit more every day. It does everything I ask of it and more. I also have nothing but praise for PCS whose customer service was exemplary, especially when they had so many people waiting on new stock to arrive.

10/10 folks :D

Hi there,

Are you still happy with this build? Rather than build my own, I thought I might just copy a good build from the reviews section. Yours is my first choice so far.
I posted a couple of build to the check my spec forum, but that just confuses me!

Hi

I am delighted with it. Best value I could have gotten for the sort of spec I was after, and it has run like a dream since day one. I have my camera back up and running again, so should be able to post some pics too, and maybe a demo vid putting the laptop through its paces.

Watch this space, lol.

Edit: Having had a look at your thread where you posted your spec, you probably won't need as much memory as there is on mine (at least not if main use is gaming and photoshop), so you could put less RAM in (8-16 gig) and save a few quid, and maybe go for a smaller SSD drive. Also, for gaming, you may then want to use those savings for a higher spec grapics card (they weren't available when I ordered). Trust me, you will love your new laptop :D

Lovely specs! I'm currently going through making my build for the Vortex III - still tweaking after 3 days to make every perfect for me! (Getting bored of it now as I just wanna get the order sent off and make it a reality xD) Reading that your SSD has been a success to you in your beast of a machine I will probably go for the same set up SSD as 1st drive, HDD as 2nd! Rather than go for max out on the RAM though, im settling for 16GB of Kingston (< the best RAM ;) ) and the upgraded processor of what you have installed (the 2.60GHz). I'm just stuck on whether to get an INTEL SSD or a KINGSTON SSD.. both being the size of 240GB with the same HDD as you chose. hmm.. =/ What do you reckon?

I was also going to get the KILLER WIRELESS CARD, just because it's the most expensive wifi card - so I imagine it must perform best and the majority of PCS customers who have placed their reviews have also said go for the KILLER wifi.. what are your views on this?

Pretty sure im gonna love my system when I eventually get the order sent off!

I honestly cannot understand peoples obsession with killer wifi cards.
I have used them and i honestly could not tell the difference between them and your bog standard linksys or belkin card honestly do not bother with one.

In regards to you getting a vortex 3 with 16GB of kingston ram be advised you may be in for a wait. My laptop is being delivered today my initial spec had the 16GB of ram. The technition was have so much trouble trying to get the bios to recognise the 16GB that on day six of my build i phoned them up changed it to 8GB lol they sent my order out that day. I wouldnt bother.

Personally I would say Intel, since they come with a 5 year warranty and are generally known to be built to last. The Kingston would probably be a bit faster though. Depends what your priorities are.

There seems to be mixed reviews on which card is best. I got the Ultimate 6300 and I'm perfectly happy with it.

I ordered with a killer wifi card and pcs have been emailing me saying:

"We are currently processing your order (number 482296) but unfortunately we awaiting stock of the following items:

GIGABIT LAN KILLER 1102 WIRELESS GAMING 802.11N NETWORK CARD: - We are currently processing your order but unfortunately it is unable to progress due to a constraint on the Killer 1102 gaming network cards.
Our understanding regarding this product is that the company manufacturing this card has recently been taken over resulting in changes to the manufacture of these cards. This has led to stock shortages.

We had been expecting stock to be available for the end of July and were then given a new ETA for this week. We have now been informed that there are still problems with production and there is no solid ETA. We will continue to chase for information but have decided to suspend the product on our website. We would also recommend that all customers waiting on this card change to an alternative."

I changed to the 450mbps intel card for £5 less.
Still waiting for chassis stock though.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the amazing advice - rep to all! :D

I'm gonna stick with the 16GB and take my chances, if it takes a while to get through production as yours did Barlew then i'll probably follow in your footsteps and then upgrade the RAM at a later date to keep it top spec! I'm gonna go for the intel, there's only a 5/mbs reading between both; Kingston and Intel and as SSD's aren't recoverable - i'd rather have something that's going to last! Due to the whole KILLER business, i'm also going to "down-grade" to the 450/mbps - spesh if you can get signal from the other end of the garden! xD

UPDATE: Going through my quote and just editing it - the KILLER wireless card is no longer an option - just incase you guys wanted to know. :p

Laptop ordered. :)
