Should manage that easily if you're buying from here.

And yes overclocking 'can' shorten the lifespan of a product as you're essentially making it work harder therefore it can degrade quicker. That said there are some 'safe' levels of OC'ing and the main issue is heat, if you can control the heat well it shouldnt be an issue

Hello shadowman, welcome to our forums :)

You're correct to some extent about overclocking, and with a budget of £2,000 you can put together a great spec. I assume you want the base unit only (no monitor, keyboard & mouse, but if you do just let us know). Here's my ideal spec:

Case
STYLISH BLACK ALUMINIUM TRIGON CASE + 2 FRONT/SIDE USB (Special Offer)
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Six Core Processor i7-970 (3.20GHz) 6.4GTs/12MB Cache

ASUS® P6X58D-E: DDR3, USB 3.0, SATA 6.0GB/s, 3-Way SLI
Memory (RAM)
12GB SAMSUNG DDR3 TRI-DDR3 1333MHz (6 x 2GB)
Graphics Card
1GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX460 GDDR5 PCI EXPRESS - DirectX® 11
Memory - 1st Hard Disk

This spec how a powerful processor and graphics card, a super fast Intel SSD with a large 6GB's scratch disk, a future proof 12GB of RAM, and a 600W PSU to feed it all. I've chosen the Trigon case on this specification, you may wish to edit this to your personal taste. :)

Hi thanks for the replys also can you tell me what is a

80GB Intel® X25-M 2.5" SSD (34nm / upto 250MB/sR | 70MB/sW)

I mean it's a Hard drive but what is it for ? is the operating system install on this or the normal 3.5" Hard Drive ? and for a powerful PC is this needed ?

This is a Solid state drive (SSD) - it's faster than a normal hard drive, so we would install your operating system on here, giving you 1000GB as a spare disk to store all your data. Photoshop/video editing users often refer to this as a scratch disk.

With an SSD your operating system & programs will run and boot up faster than normal, so it's a recommended addition to a £2000 video editing PC :)

No need for RAID 0 - the SSD will be faster than RAID 0 without the increased risk of data loss :D

And no you can't add RAID - RAID requires two identical drives unfortunately...

The green drives are generally a little slower, as they rotate at a variable speed between 5,400rpm and 7,200rpm to conserve energy.

The best drive for performance is a WD Black SATA 6GB's drive.

how much space does windows 7 need to reserve for installation and general usage.

I'd be thinking in this day and age where games can have an install size of several GB, say for example, an 80GB SSD would run out of space pretty quick.

would it be possible for the SSD to be purely for OS installation, drivers and other necessary items for the system to operate, and have the second larger drive as the default install location for games and programs?

I am new to SSD's and am pondering the thought of having a SSD/SATA setup, but wasn't sure how it would operate.

What about doing a RAID 0 with 2 1TB WD Black SATA 6GB's drive ? will this be good ?

It will be good, but the SSD option will be better, and you won't have the risk of losing your data if one of two hdd's fails.

An 80GB SSD would be purely for the OS, drivers and your basic applications such as Office, Anti Virus, Photoshop, Adobe etc etc. Then when you install the games, you can choose install them onto the secondary larger HDD which would prevent the SSD getting full.

ok ta, so how much space does windows 7 alone require as a minimum?

also, if the time came to reinstall windows, would both drives need to be reformatted, or would the games be ok left on there?

Windows 7 usually takes up around 15GB - 17GB. So if a customer were to request a HDD to partitioned we would recommend a minimum of 25GB just to be safe - so with an 80GB SSD you will be fine.

In the event of a re installation of Windows, you wouldn't need to format the secondary HDD but some games will need to be reinstalled as they install files into the system registry of the OS (which will have been lost after the re installation). However, some games which run in clients such as World of Warcraft or any games in Steam will not be required to be installed again.

Nice spec. But if you got the same spec with the 930 overclocked then it would be substantially more capable for both Gaming and Video Editing.
