Query re PSU requirements

When trying to configure a computer, even with a relatively modest GPU such as an R9 270X or a GTX 760, I get an error message saying:

"2. Due to the power requirements (AMPS,) the power supply you have selected is not suitable, please increase your PSU size or change to a higher spec model."

And yet the build is well within the maximum Wattage of the PSU.

This error message doesn't go away until I try selecting one of the modular power supplies. And incidentally at this point I get another message saying I've chosen a 650W power supply whereas it has been calculated I only need 366W and so a downgrade is suggested!

So basically I don't understand why I'm getting the first error message. Is there some feature of the non-modular power supplies which makes them incompatible with most GPUs?

Is this PSU issue not getting to a point where PCS need to come up with an alternate supply of PSUs. It smacks a bit of sillyness IMO to keep getting repeatedly hit with that in the configurator.

The R9-270x, GTX760 and heck even the much touted 'you don't need much power' GTX750TI demand you buy the pricier 650 RM series. And lo and behold - that PSU is now out of stock till 04/04. So effectively their saying they can't take any orders...unless you order a 750w RM PSU?? I understand the AMPs response given, but this has been this way for months - time to get a supply of different decent tier lower wattage PSUs that can handle these GPUs PCS? They do exist!

My thoughts exactly, it's a real shame to have the 650w PSU out of stock too. One possible option would be to buy your own PSU, have it shipped directly to PCS and get the cost of the original PSU removed from your order. That's obviously far from ideal but is possible to arrange.

Maybe PCS are contractually bound to take shipment of a certain number of the cheaper corsair units, but unless its some sort of exclusivity agreement than I don't see why they couldn't take in a separate line that can support the 7xx series cards from Nvidia...

I ordered the Corsair CS 650W (which I see is no longer offered, presumably replaced by the out of stock RM 650W) and my order is now in the 13th day of pre-production. Could this be why my order is not progressing? I have had no communication telling me the part is not in stock.

If this is the reason, good customer service (and wishful thinking ) would give me a free upgrade to the 750W since they have already accepted my order, taken the money and have now gone beyond the anticipated delivery date!

I think the expected delivery date is the 4th of April so I suspect you will be waiting a while yet. The terms you agreed to when ordering say PCS will get you your PC within 30 days, the estimated time of delivery is just for a rough idea. If they are unable to get your PC to you in that timeframe they might upgrade the PSU for you, but they will not do so unless it is over 30 days. You can pay the extra to upgrade to the 750w PSU by calling them up if you would like your rig to move along faster.

For some reason, and I don't know why, PCS do not let customers know that a component is out of stock. they only way to tell is to order fast track as a test. Even then it only lets you know if it is currently in stock, by the time of your build it could be out of stock again.

One other issue I had was trying to configure the following spec. The spec below worked fine with the tiny 350W PSU, but if I tried upgrading to the 450W PSU I then got the 'lack of AMPS' error?

Its the same reason as describe in the post above, the lower spec PSU (for whatever reason) can't push enough AMPS to the GPU. The 350w one probably has the same issue to be honest as its the same family of units.

The reason you can select the 350W without issue is some customers want to use their own PSU so we have low exceptions against the 350W.

Using the messaging system I contacted Jack with my query and he responded quickly saying that the CS 650W is in stock and my PC should be entering build today - hooray!
