Octane III - 15.6" model

I recently changed jobs and will be travelling around a bit more so I decided to use a part of my new salary to switch from my desktop to a laptop. It certainly helped my decision that the full powered Pascal cards can be put into laptops. My desktop had a Gigabyte G1 GTX 970, an i5 4690k and 8GB of ram so I knew it wouldn't be cheap to replicate that performance in a laptop. I was pleasently surprised though to find that the prices weren't actually that much more than the equivalent desktop power and it certainly reinforced my decision. Out of all of the brands that sell the Clevo model laptops I found PCSpecialist to once again be the best priced and on this occassion they actually offered more variety.

I recieved my laptop the Thursday (5 working days after ordering) before the one just gone and I was immediately pleased with my decision to go for the 15" model as it is more than big enough and I suspect the 17" one would be much more difficult to carry around because of the extra size. I also added both the 250GB SSD and 750GB SSD I had in my Desktop to the laptop once it arrived which was not too challenging.

So far I have probably only used the laptop for just over 10 hours as I was away with work for this week and found very little time to use it but it was easy to move when I needed to. It performs exceptionally well on the games I've used it on so far and the only one to test it was GTA 5 on max settings where it struggled to stay above 60Hz in grassy areas online. It still easily outperformed my previous desktop though.

My only complaint so far is that the noise produced is quite noticable with no sounds playing. However it does keep the temperatures at around 40 degrees when doing simple browsing and below 70 for most gaming so it should pay off in terms of the devices longevity.

It's also worth pointing out the battery life is awful, it will only last between 2 and 3 hours for web browsing and I haven't even dared trying whilst gaming but I would suspect under 1 hour. This is stated in the description on the site though and it should be fairly clear this is as much a portable desktop as it is a laptop.

Overall I am suitably impressed with every aspect of the laptop and it has a pretty sleek design as can be seen by the pictures below.

Is the Screen actually 60Hz? as I'm looking into buying 1 but the site says that the screens are only 48Hz and the guy in the live chat said the same :(

How are you finding the 1080p display? Is the 60hz refresh rate adequate?

60Hz is certainly enough for me at the moment, though I have admittedly never used a high refresh rate display so I can't compare it to anything better. I may also be tempted to replace the screen with a 120Hz display in the future if one becomes available.

I'm pretty confident the display runs at 60Hz and I was told it was a 60Hz display when I contacted support before buying the laptop.

The old Octane IIs were listed as having 48hz screens: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/matrix/338/84/8/0/ Perhaps that is where the information came from. The product pages for the Octane IIIs haven't been fully updated and some of the information may still be from the template of the old Octane II which it appears was copied to generate the Octane III configurators.

Although it doesn't sound ideal if a screen that is 60hz as confirmed by a user is still listed as 48hz and this is the information that the staffer on live chat was using to base their replies.

That's a huge relief. :)

By the way could I know what the temps and noise levels you get when gaming? might bite the bullet if they aren't too high.
And whats the fingerprint sensor like on the touch pad, it looks like it could get annoying bumping into it when browsing.

The noise isn't great, not too bad when browsing but very noticable in a quiet room when gaming however it does keep the temps pretty good so it's a good trade off in my opinion. With regards to the fingerprint sensor I have been using a mouse most of the time so I'm probably not best placed to comment. However for the couple of hours I've used the touchpad for I've never once had an issue with it.

Hi Bro,

Would you be able to test something for me,
Can you check its monitor refresh rate

To find the Monitor refresh rate.

Right click to on desktop, click screen resolution, then click advance settings and find the monitor tab, it should show ur refresh rate,
and post a pic

Can you also check if you can Overclock the Monitor

by going through https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRa5h4qvACY

The only 48Hz screen that PCS have ever sold was the 15" 4K Pentile Samsung screen (which they originally listed at 60Hz, but changed to 48Hz shortly after I asked them to confirm whether it was actually 60Hz given that the leaked datasheet showed it was 48Hz).

Everything else is 60Hz, including their Panasonic 3K screen (which is what I ended up with on my original Defiance - it's a lovely screen and most certainly isn't Pentile!)

You can also find out easily enough by using a website called Panelook: where PCS provide the exact model number of the panel you can just look it up on there to get the specs.

Sorry I tried to find the place to screenshot but I couldn't find it on Windows 10. However I know it is 60Hz and I wasn't able to get an overclock of anything past 64Hz so no much leeway.
