Noise of new system

Hi all,

I've received my new build from PC Specialist today and the fans and computer are making an awful lot of noise. The noise a full size standing fan would make, the kind used to cool a room down. My build is below, is this normal? When reading reviews for the parts I chose, everywhere said it was quiet but this is far from quiet!

Thanks for any help

First off, run Windows Update until no more updates are found. If you have to reboot then run Windows Update immediately after the reboot. Also be sure to install all optional driver updates and review other optional updates and install those unless there is good reason not to.

All updated, there was quite a few but still making the same noise after restart. I turned it on and off just in case and still the same.

Does it sound like it's coming from the rear fan? From what I understand there is some confusion when configuring these on the fan controller.

Do you have iCue installed? This is your fan controller. If you open it it, it should show you which mode the system is on and the various fans connected.

My guess is it's either the wiring, or the configuration of iCue. Just to double check though, download and install HWMonitor so that we can see what's happening with the CPU/GPU temperatures.

Edit: Doesn't change the advice but I'm not sure the PRO XT comes with the controller, might just be the capellix. Worth checking anyway.

No it sounds as if its coming from the top. I do have icue and it says everything is normal, no temps about 30 degrees and the fans are on balanced. I have tried changing this to quiet but makes no difference?

I can install HWMonitor but it does tell me the the temps on icue so do I still need this?

I would do the checks via HWMonitor, it's much quicker at polling.

With regards to iCue not making any difference, are you seeing a visual change in the RPM speed of the fans once you change to quiet? Is zero fan an option?

All the temps seem fine looking at HWMonitor, nothing higher than 40c

I've amended icue, fan one is now at 0RPM but fan 2 doesn't respond. Stuck at 1754 RPM, not sure why, or if there is even a fan 2. I noticed no change in sound from putting fan one to 0 though.

The Pump is at 1955RPM, can't amend this. I would send pictures but it tells me the files are too large to attach

I have a hissing noise that is coming from the PSU on my new built but I was told it's common / expected.

It isn't hissing, it's just a very loud fan noise. Looking at jt when I put fan 1 on extreme it reaches 731 rpm but fan 2 is in 1776 rpm and the pump 1953 rpm and i can't slow either down. They don't respond?

Sounds like it's not configured correctly to me.

How are you changing the fan speed settings? when you go into the fan speed you need to select the fans individually at times and change them. The border around the fan in question will change colour to indicate what setting it is at etc.

I think I'll need to send it back to PC Specialist. I've spent all night and installed various software to try and controll the fan speed and nothing works at all. It's running at max none stop and the noise is giving me a headache.

Its one fan on the CPU Cooler that just won't stop or he controll. Either faulty product or faulty assembly. If I take the side of and hold that one fan when the computer starts its nice and quiet. Soon as I let go it's like a jet engine again, crazy!

It's likely just the fans aren't wired in correctly.

Have a look where they are wired to.

There's a micro controller which is part of the case, looks like this:

Nexus-2-540x540.jpg

It should be wired as followed, PCS seem to get it wrong on the Fractal cases quite often:

I thought so but couldn't find where abouts it connects to to be honest.

I've loaded some pictures on the below link as it says they're too big to post here, is it possibly the second picture? Though this is so tucked away I can hardly see it!

This is also the noise it's making

It would normally be under the other case side with all the cable management.

Wow that's at full chat all right. I'm amazed that's only one fan.

If you're not comfortable with configuring it then I would have PCS collect and sort it for you. Just be aware that you may be a number of weeks without the system.

Regardless if you have a go or not, I would be highlighting this to PCS as to me that just isn't acceptable. Whoever has put that system through its paces haven't paid attention to what was in front of them to think that was acceptable.

Yes, fully agreed, unfortunately there seems to be a huge knowledge gap particularly with the Fractal cases as they have this micro controller.

It does need to be highlighted as is happening far too often.

Definitely. The thing is, it's very easy to mis-configure the fans. I've certainly done it and scratched my noodle at the outcome. The key is that the reason why I was scratching my noodle is that it wasn't working as it should have. I'm a little disappointed that it wasn't picked up on boot up. How that could be setup for testing without a single query on why it sounds like a jet engine astounds me.

Making the mistake is one thing, very easy to do and very easy to forgive. Not picking it up through all the testing and quality checks though? That's a process that definitely needs some firming up on the checklists :D

Wholeheartedly agree (y)

As soon as you powered it on you'd know something wasn't right.

100%, I googled it a lot thinking i was being an idiot and had got a stupidly loud cooler but as soon as I powered it on I knew it wasn't right. I've no idea how that's missed, it's crazy loud, even someone with small to no skill (i.e. me!) Knew it couldn't be right
