Laptop purchase advice

Hi.
Ive got a flickering screen from a damaged Rtx card on my laptop. New MB needed apparently.
Will be buying a new LapTop as i dont want to replace the part and have it happen again.
Ive seen posts on the forum of people talking about needing configure Windows 10 for gaming.
Im unsure what that means. Im in desperate need of advice on the configure part and if you could, a recommended chassis
for good cooling.
Thanks in advance.

So you're looking for a new laptop?

What's your max budget?

Is it just for gaming?

Do you need it to be portable?

Hi. Thanks for the reply.
Budget is about £1700-1800
Gaming and photo editing but mostly gaming.
I wont be carrying it about. Just around the house.
Main concern is overheating. As i mentioned the last one i bought lasted 2years.
Cheers.

Had you serviced your previous laptop? Any gaming laptop requires repasting once a year or so to keep temps optimal, otherwise it will lead to overheating. The same would be of any of these.

I had blown the dust out of it regularly. Not done any re pasting and am only now aware it needed doing.
It was the RTX card that went. i dont think they come off do they? Ah. i suppose the heat sink would be repastable though.
My error.

If it was only 2 years old it should still be in warranty? I would look into that before considering a replacement.

Only 1 year parts warranty though. Im quoted over £800 for new motherboard so definitely not covered.
It's still a lot cheaper than buying a whole new system.

What happened with your laptop wasn't a problem with the laptop, it was due to not being maintained, would have happened with any laptop.

I would just get a replacement motherboard and then make sure you service it when required going forward.

So servicing it would require me to do what exactly. Am I taking off all heat sinks and replacing the paste on the cpu and gpu?
So what is this Configure for Windows I've seen people tell others to do?

Servicing just means taking off the bottom of the laptop and cleaning out dust from the fins on the heatsink and fans and if temperatures suggest then repasting whichever component requires it, if its a single cooling lane then obviously you'd have to do both gpu and cpu.

By configuring windows I'm not certain what you mean other than you should always clean install a major OS release which is normally once a year. To do that you need to know how to configure Windows.

Right, thank you. with a pc im fine but never done anything to a laptop really.

Towards the bottom someone says:
"Re heat problems - I cant say I have seen too many with overheating problems. Laptops such as the ones you are looking at designed knowing they will run hot - some of the moans you see are where:

- people have not configured Windows and also the laptops specific control centre correctly.
- people do not fully understand that they have just bought a high performance laptop that will run warmer/hotter than a normal one.
- people have had their laptop over a year and have not conducted any (or have conducted minimal) maintenance on it - ie such as repasting."

Ive seen Configured windows and Control centre mentioned a few times. Thats what im unsure of.

Yes, that's just normal windows configuration, you have to know how to install windows and configure drivers and troubleshoot windows update, standard stuff.

If windows isn't configured, then the management driver won't be installed correctly, as such the cooling won't be configured properly, as such you'll get overheating.

This is on any laptop.

Just a bit of an update if you are still there SpyderTracks. Or anyone really. The brand new motherboard has no warranty from the suppliers
so PCS can only offer me a 3 month warranty. Does that sound correct? I cant believe the MB has no warranty from new.
Not sure about this now.
Cheers.

Sorry, who's supplying the motherboard? PCSpecialist?

Yeah. This is all through them. They say their suppliers dont give a warranty with the motherboard they buy.
That is what's stipulated in their terms and conditions:

7.13If a product is repaired outside of the warranty period specified on your order, unless otherwise specified the warranty provided on any replacement parts is capped at a maximum of three months.

Fair enough. I admit i never read it. I do however find it difficult to understand why a new part should not have a warranty of a year or more.
I thought new products had to have a year warranty.
It kinda makes you buy a new one for the full warranty than get it fixed.
