Advice on build please

Hi all
I’ve been researching, phoning for advice, but got a little lost with it all.
We’re after a new PC for our family, so after a build that satisfies everybody, and something that will last a few years.
Son likes gaming, he’s asked for 4K, but think his friends are influencing him somewhat.
Daughter is getting into YouTube videoing, so editing etc. Think she wants to become famous!!
I’ve a drone, so would want to get into making films etc with it. Keep and edit some photos, and basically all the children’s school needs for foreseeable future.
Also, what type of monitor would be recommended, they’ve asked for a curve one.
Budget is £2500 for pc, then the monitor would be on top of that.
Any help or info would be great. Thanks👍👍

Hi. It might be easier if you could give us the total budget including the monitor. The PC spec needs to drive the monitor, so there is no point us speccing a PC at say £2,500 and then finding the monitor budget cannot afford the required monitor to use it.

At first glance I'd say you can afford a good 1440p system but not a 4K one.

Edit: Actually might be able to spec a 4K PC for £2,500 but do you have the £700+ budget for the monitor to go with it?

Hi. Sorry, was looking at £2500 for the pc, then I was going to get a monitor to suit. So I was budgeting around £500 for a good monitor. My friend has a LG 32gp850b that looked great, but my boy wanted a curved, but of curves not the way to go, then flat it’ll be.

That's not a 4k monitor, it's 1440p which is why it's cheap.

A 4k 144Hz monitor will cost around £700 for an entry level panel.

Aaahhh. I’m still gathering knowledge, and trying to keep up with my boys requests.
Think he suggested 4K due to his mates, he’s 12 going on 20.
Just really I want to keep them all happy, if that’s possible. It’s an investment for my children, so if the build goes over £2500, then I’ll cross that bridge.
So on top of my build, sounds like I need around £1k for a good monitor.

On a £3k total budget, you could probably squeeze a 4K system in. An i5-12600KF CPU, 3080 10GB GPU, 16GB RAM and 1.5 TB of M2 storage with a decent cooler and PSU is around £2,250. That would leave you £750 for the monitor which is enough to get an 4K Gigabyte M32U or something similar. The problem is both the 12600KF is out of stock right this instant. I'm sure the 12600KF will be in stock soon.

Right now you could order a system with a 12700 and 3080 (pre-order only though so it might be more of a wait) for £2,310. Something like that below.

It has to be said though that I wonder if you'd be better spending less and just getting a very good 1440p system with the ability to be upgraded to a 4K system later. I've got a 4K system but I use it for work and play. For leisure purposes, 4K is not good value. You pay quite a lot more for not that much actual difference. 1440p is really the sweet spot.

I thought the 4K maybe overkill. So you’d think 1440 would be sufficient for what we,re looking for.
Say £3k is my budget, what build and monitor would you recommend?
I’d like it to store all our old photos and music too.
I don’t mind spending more than £3k, it’s more important to get something that’s going to perform for eveybody, and last a few years.
Thanks again for your help

At 1440p you have a wide range of options.

At the lower end, you can choose a 12400F CPU with 3060Ti that will happily drive a 27" 16:9 1440p monitor. A very good IPS monitor for this will cost around £300. So all in you are looking at perhaps £1,950.

Case
LIAN LI LANCOOL 215 GAMING CASE - Still a very good airflow case with disco lights
Processor (CPU)

Intel® Core™ i5 Six Core Processor i5-12400F (2.5GHz) 18MB Cache - 6 core processor but faster than prior gen 8 core CPUs
Motherboard
ASUS® TUF GAMING B660-PLUS WIFI D4: ATX, LGA1700, USB 3.2, SATA 6GBs - More than adequate motherboard with wifi
Memory (RAM)
16GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3060 Ti - HDMI, DP, LHR - Adequate GPU for 1440p
1st M.2 SSD Drive
500GB SAMSUNG 980 PRO M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 6900MB/R, 5000MB/W)
2nd M.2 SSD Drive

1st Storage Drive
2TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 256MB CACHE - Cheap HDD for photos, videos etc
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET - Overspecced PSU but means that it can take later 4K GPU
Power Cable

1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
PCS FrostFlow 100 V3 Series High Performance CPU Cooler - Cooler CPU allows a much cheaper tower air cooler
Thermal Paste

At the top-end, you should consider a 34" ultra-wide 3440x1440. It's not 4K but it provides a more immersive experience and that extra width is also good for productivity apps. A good 34" is around £500. For example the Gigabyte M34WQ is currently £479 (https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/gigabyte/m34wq).

You could combine that with a spec that is the same as for the 4K PC, just with a change of GPU and additional HDD for photos etc. With the monitor total cost is around £2,750.

Oooooo ideal, huge thanks.
That’s my next hour sorted, we,ll be looking at that straight away.
Just checking, so this will sort my boys gaming, my daughters streaming desires, and the parents video editing, with the capacity to store all of our photos and music?

Yep, although you’d probably want to consider going for 32GB RAM with the video editing and content creation in mind.

I think the ideal system would be to take the mid ground with a 12600KF and 3070 GPU. The problem is both are out of stock. I'm sure the 12600KF will come back into stock very soon but the 3070 has been less easy to get hold of recently (partially because it's a great 1440p card).

Think I’d rather wait for the 3070ti after researching faaarrrr too much.
If I was to blow things and go 3080ti, would I need to change other things?

Why do you want a 3080 Ti? Are you looking for a 1440p build or 4K build? The original 4K build would be fine with a 3080 Ti rather than 3080 but an 3080 Ti is terrible value for money. It only adds 5-10% over the 3080.

I think you need to decide what your budget exactly is. It's incredibly easy to overspec all the shiny bits on an PC.

The budget keeps going up! I did see Scott put his high end build up on a thread, that was £2700ish, which is fine.
The 3080ti, is as you say very expensive. Think the 1440p set up would be ample, 4K seems a little indulgent, I was just trying to keep my son happy.
So are we saying, wait for 3070ti, or the 3080 would also be ample. Obviously a large investment, so want it right.
The monitor I was looking at was the Gigabyte 34” ultra wide, which seems to get good reviews, have looked at the Samsung G9 also, which looks awesome, but that’s indulgent also.

If your monitor is going to be a 34" 1440p then the 3070 (out of stock and hard to get hold of) or 3070 Ti (in stock but poorer value) is the way forward. The 3080 is overkill. For the Samsung G9 then it's probably better with the 3080. If you want to go 4K then go with the 3080.

I don't see many reasons, at current price levels, to go for the 3080 Ti for solely gaming purposes.

That is the dogs doo daa’s thanks Scott.
Sorry for being blaze about the budget, we didn’t know how much it would cost.
We chatted to the kids, and they’ve a choice. Either that’s they’re birthdays sorted, or we got to sell one of them!!!!
Thanks again.
