Hey guys.
This is actually my third time buying a PC from PC Specialist. My first was in 2012, second in 2018 and here I am preparing for another.
I have used Intel and Nvidia for my last two builds but thinking of switching to AMD.

Grateful for your thoughts on the below build. My budget is £1,800 inc VAT. I have gone over ever so slightly in my build but the second drive is not essential as I have a fair few already which I could add in.

I have two 1080p monitors which are HDMI. Currently, I connect one via a HDMI to DVI converter. Checking the motherboard below, it looks like that will be the case again. Is there a decent motherboard that supports two HDMIs?

This build is mostly for gaming, but would also be used for Affinity Photo, Publisher, Design, etc.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

I reckon you can go a lot cheaper and get significantly better performance.

You haven't mentioned anything where you need the 7950X's massive single-core performance. I'd be inclined to get a 7700 instead: much cooler, much cheaper, and pretty much as good in gaming. For heavy multi-core stuff it's not as good, but you don't mention any of that.

Then we can upgrade pretty much the rest of the system to be what I'd recommend. This includes the graphics card: the 6700XT is a fair bit better than the one you chose. It would also allow for 1440p gaming: this build is cheap enough that you could upgrade one of your displays to 1440p: I think this would be very worthwhile.

Hi @sck451 .

Thanks for the feedback and adjusted build. Sounds good.
Although the GPU you suggest came out 2 1/2 years ago? Would keeping the rest of the build the same but going for the RX 7700 XT be a better shout?

Happy to spend more elsewhere too on the motherboard, etc and go up to £1,800 inc. VAT.

Thanks,
Ian

Well the 6700 XT is still very capable and is very good value. The 7700 XT costs quite a bit more. I wouldn't argue against it, but I would get a 1440p display and a 6700 XT over getting a 7700XT with a 1080p display.

For the time being, I am content with 1080p monitors.
Are there other upgrades I can make? I am looking for the best machine I can possibly get for ~£1,800 inc. VAT and so happy to pay extra for a better GPU, CPU, etc if it does provide better performance.

Thanks,
Ian

No point in paying for a better GPU at 1080p mate it'll have little to no affect. The GPU will get held back by the monitor

You pair the GPU to the monitor so you don't waste money as it's the most expensive part of the build but it's also the part that gets changed first when upgrades happen. No point in paying for more power now when you can't use it

Having a GPU running at only 50%-60% because of the monitor is just wasting the money, you're better buying a cheaper GPU

sck451

I agree with @Steveyg. Spending more without upgrading the monitor is kind of pointless. This system is already a very, very strong 1080p one: putting more money into it without a display upgrade would be wasting money.

Thanks @sck451 @Steveyg

Really appreciate your help.

I am looking for this build to last four or so years and so if buying 1440p monitors now makes sense to then have a better GPU/CPU rather than needing to upgrade soon, I am happy to spend more. As in buy 2x 1440p monitors on top of the £1800 inc.

I just never felt the need for better monitors, but if it means I can have a better GPU/CPU then sure. I guess it's time. lol

You really only need one 1440p me for example I have one 1440p and two 1080p monitors

The 1440p is the main monitor the others are for other stuff I want to see as well. So you can still keep your exiting monitors just leave enough room for a new one to take over as the main monitor

You don't need a better monitor, but there's no point spending more on the PC unless you do. My advice would either be to upgrade a monitor, or to save some money. Both are good approaches!

That makes sense, thanks guys / @sck451 @Steveyg

Would you mind checking over the below spec? I have taken your advice on board from the earlier thread but have made a couple of tweaks as thinking about it, it would be nice to upgrade my whole setup. So have also added a 27in 1440p monitor. I am going to do as you have done @Steveyg. Run 3 monitors, with my main being the 1440p.

It said I don't need 750PSU so dropped to the 650.

Compared to my build...
  • CPU: 7700 -> 7900. This isn't worth it for gaming. The 7900 offers little or no extra gaming performance.
  • B650 -> X670E. This isn't worth it, full stop. Unless you have exotic connectivity needs, X670E is just not worth spending the extra on.
  • 6700 XT -> 7700 XT. This is marginal: I can't argue against current gen, though the price of the 7700 XT isn't terribly appealing. But not a bad call if you're willing to spend the extra.
  • 750 RMx -> 650 CV. This is a bad call. You've gone from a high-quality power supply to a lower quality one. It's OK, but not great. And you have gone down to 650W, which may be enough for this current build, but will restrict you in the future if you want an upgrade.
  • FrostFlow 150 -> FrostFlow 200. This is much of a muchness. They'll perform pretty much the same: both are plenty for the 7700.
  • Q27G2E: not the monitor I'd choose. Unfortunately none of the PCS monitors are ones I'd be keen to recommend. It's fine, but you can get much better for your money. The Gigabyte G27Q can be had for £280 and would be a much better bet.
With that Gigabyte monitor from elsewhere, you could then go with this build:

Hey @sck451

Thanks so much for all the support.

I have taken your expertise and going to go ahead with the above build with just one tweak (I might be crazy, but happy to spend in the great scheme of things an extra ~£100 to have a 'better' CPU even if gains are minimal). Opting for the 7900X instead of the 7900 as I originally put.

You don't want the 7900X. It is much hotter, much less efficient, and the cooler is not enough. The 7900 or 7800 would be fine.

The best option however would be the 7800X3D, which is the best gaming CPU there is. I'm not sure it's value for money (you'll get the same performance in this build as with the 7700 as you'll be GPU-limited) but it's an option and is about the same price as the 7900X. It's also efficient enough that, for gaming, the 150 cooler is probably sufficient, though it's not all I'd want in all honesty...
