14" LAFITÉ III or 15.6" COSMOS VII

Hi All,

My 5 year old 14" PCSpecialist ms-1492 finally packed it in due to tears in the plastic case, and I'm looking to replace it with something new.

I am unlikely to use the laptop for gaming, and will mostly use it for:
  • Work (Excel, Word, JavaScript coding)
  • Downloading (not streaming) and watching movies
  • Browsing the web

It is unlikely to ever leave the house, unless when I go on vacation (twice a year?).

PRO's I can see with the 15.6" COSMOS VII:
Slightly better spec for the same money

PRO's I can see with the LAFITÉ III:
It offers an aluminium chassis, which seems appealing after my current laptop is only being replaced due to the plastic case being beyond repair.

The biggest differentiator I can see left at this point is the screen (size), hence my questions.

  1. Coming from a 14" system, I don't think another 14" laptop would be a problem. My only concern is that seamingly the LAFITÉ III is actually a 13.3", which might turn out to be smaller than what I'd be expecting?! Any thoughts?
  2. Additionally, the LAFITÉ III seems to have a higher NTSC rating:
    14" LAFITÉ III: 60Hz FHD IPS Panel (1920 x 1080), 72% NTSC
    15.6" COSMOS VII: 60Hz FHD Panel (1920 x 1080), 45% NTSC
Should that make enough of a difference to make me want to go for the LAFITÉ III over the 15.6" COSMOS VII?

Any thoughts on the sound for both systems would also be appreciated, as I'd use it a fair amount to watch movies.

There are (or were) 2 lafites. One 13.3" and the new one 14". They are different clevo chassis models and the 14" one should indeed be 14".

However, it still says 13.3" in a few places probably because PC Specialist did a bad job copy-pasting the configurator, which frankly they have a habit of doing for newly released chassis...

Do check with them for confirmation, but 14" should indeed mean 14"

The Cosmos chassis is larger and heavier. The CPU is substantially more powerful - though the extent to which that would matter for your uses is debatable. It would compile faster for coding I guess, and potentially handle complex Excel workloads better.

The Lafite does have a better screen in terms of colour accuracy although out of people posting reviews of their Cosmos and Vyper laptops recently nobody has complained or commented about the screen being an issue afaicr.

Thank you for your reply Oussebon. Do you think someone from PCSpecialist will reply to this post, or should I email?

How much of a difference do you think there would be between the two displays? You mention the colours will be better on the Lafite, but will it be noticeable? I have no experience with the NTSC, so don't know if the difference between the two is a big enough differentiator.

Anyone know about the difference in sound?

Email, or phone as phone will get an answer faster. Almost all posts on the forums are by regular clients like you and me, not staff :)

If you put them side by side and looked at a load of images etc I expect you'd see a difference. But I suppose the other way of looking at it is whether the screen on the Cosmos is good enough (I assume it is given the lack of complaints about it or the Vyper in people's reviews), rather than which is technically better - unless you will spent a lot of time looking at photos, artwork, etc.
