2 Computers, 1 Job which one is better?

Hi there,

When I first got into computers when I was a youngster, I used Windows a lot until I could afford a Mac, which I have been using ever since for the last 12 years or so.
I now am due an upgrade as things are starting to require more processing power, memory and graphics. Every time I edit on my Macbook Pro it sounds like it's about to take off.

I love Macs, though, Life as happened and at this moment in time, I cannot afford another Mac. But I can afford a Windows computer which can give me a higher spec computer at much less of a cost.

Eventually one day along the road (like at least 5-6 years, or if my career and life situation changes) I'll go back to a Mac, but for now, I think I'm due an upgrade.

I read the thread about "A quick note to prospective buyers" and I would consider myself a "Budget Geek" haha! I know my way around computers and would be able to fix things if it comes to it, (If I had a guide) I understand things so it's not like I'm a complete novice, but I'm not a fully fledged computer wizz.

The workstaions that I have made will be simply for video editing, audio editing, photoshop and a little bit of After Effects. I want to cut down my editing time drastically, the time it takes to render things on my current computer is a joke. If I can cut this down by even an hour, I'll be happy. Time is our most valuable asset and I'd like to be able to work on multiple things without slowing down the computer. E.g: Edit a photo whilst a video is exporting. It won't be a computer I d*ck around on and surf the web, or play games on, it's purely for a workstation.

Below are two (and I admit) very different computers, but I have a budget of 2.8K at the absolute max which one would help me out more? The first one below is only about £600 dearer than the second one, but it seems so much more powerful.

Can anyone help me out?

Can I say I’m certainly no component wizard and all I’ve learnt has mostly been through listening to the guys here and elsewhere and I’m sure the guys here can certainly help you out, one other bit of info they are going to need is what type of monitor you plan to use ie what resolution and frequency it is capable of running at for example I have a respectable 1440p 165 Mhz gaming monitor. Also are you absolutely wedded to intel my understanding is that these days intel is using what is considered fairly ‘ancient‘ architecture that is not likely to change for some time and is generally over priced for what you get. AMD is considered the better CPUs at the moment both in pricing and in over all architecture.

Hi Robert,

Thank you for this!

I use the following screen: https://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-29UM68

29'' 21:9 UltraWide® Full HD IPS LED Monitor (29'' Diagonal)

  • UltraWide FHD 2560x1080 IPS Display
  • sRGB Over 99%
  • AMD FreeSync™ Technology
  • Black Stabilizer
  • Dynamic Action Sync
Didn't know that about AMD/Intel, I'll see what the guys say and I'll look into it, thank you so much!

We love you Ukraine
Firstly, AMD are far superior when it comes to multi-core/thread work, not to mention AMD have a distinct lack of flaws.

For your max budget, this spec would be the best outside of a Threadripper system. It will also be very quiet. One final note: I did not intend to hit your max budget exactly, it just happened :ROFLMAO:
